What is the definition of the field of educational technology? How has the definition of the field changed over time? What is a leading professional organization in the field? In searching countless journal articles and books, I have found that there is no clear-cut definition for the field of technology. Based on this extensive reading, the field of educational technology is vast and ever-changing. It includes the research and application of technology to enhance and support teaching and learning. Educational technology uses various tools, resources, and technologies to facilitate the educational process, improve teaching methods, and enhance academic outcomes (An & Oliver, 2020; Hew et al., 2019; Voet & De Wever, 2016). Educational technology is systematic in the process of applying technology to teaching (Saettler, 2005). In Saettlers's (2005) The Evolution of American Technology, he introduces agriculture practices as an educational technology before the 20th century (Saettler, 2005). Then, there is Weller (2020), who starts his educational technology explanation at the beginning of educational technologies in 1994, the year the Internet began to enter the mainstream. Computers became more available in schools and homes (Weller, 2020). Only a few years later, there were laptops, and now computer literacy is necessary for many functions at school, in the workplace, and at home. Coding, gaming, and communication technologies are implemented in classroom teaching today. There is also the growing integration of online and distance learning. Last week, we looked at apps, social media, and websites used to expand the field further. The definition of educational technology in the 21st century focuses on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, and the use of big data in education. The emphasis is on fostering digital literacy critical thinking and preparing learners for the challenges of a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Educational technology will continue to grow as new technology emerges and educators explore innovative ways to enhance teaching and learning. The field of educational technology extends beyond any single classroom. The Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT) is a leading professional organization that promotes instructional improvement through integrating instructional technology (AECT, 2024). Members come from various educational institutions, the government, and industry. AECT organizes conferences and publishes journals, books, and other resources for educational technology development. It provides a platform for educators, instructional designers, researchers, and other professionals to collaborate and share their expertise in educational technology (AECT, 2024). References AECT.
