In my classroom I differentiate for my students in reading and writing without drawing attention to the students needs in a way to protect their dignity we use VKRP (literacy@virginia.edu, 2023) and VALLS (literacy@virginia.edu, 2023). VKRP is
the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program testing for math and social skills (literacy@virginia.edu, 2023). VALLS is the Virginia Language Literacy Screener (literacy@virginia.edu, 2023). To differentiate the students, I use the data from the scoring on how the students did on the subtests.
Differentiation benefits all students by providing an inclusive environment by using various learning styles (How Differentiated Instruction Supports All Students, 2023) and techniques to help the students learn. For example, some students are hands on students. I give students opportunities to be hands on with what they are learning. Some students are struggling with letters. So, we manipulate them. I let the students build the letters with popsicle sticks. This technique has been helping children learn the letters. I was really amazed. My principal gave me this suggestion. It really works.
We also do Zoo phonics. Which students make a body movement for each letter for the sound. Wow! How that works! For example, for the letter Aa children will chomp their hands and say /a/ /a/ /a/. The children have memorized all movements for each
letter and the sound. Now not all children know the sounds and letters. So, I use the popsicle sticks and then we do the movement for the sound. Has been working! Now I have two children who are still struggling. I must keep practicing. Having diverse ways for children to learn not just from rote and memorization. Students are really motivated to learn when they have diverse ways to learn.

Structured literacy is an approach to teaching oral and written language (Greene, n.d.). Structured literacy approach is based on the science of how students learn to read. Students who struggle to read, structured literacy is helpful for the students. Explicit, systematic instruction in the structure of the English Language (Paul, 2018).
Research shows that structured literacy may help with students to enhance their skills in reading (Greene, n.d.). Teachers introduce new concepts and skills in a logical order with structured literacy. The International Dyslexia Association came up with this “umbrella term” to bring together the popular methods such as Orton Gillingham, Explicit Phonics, and Multisensory Structured language (Paul, 2018).
Each of the elements of Structured literacy are equally important to building a strong foundation for the students (Paul, 2018). The elements all work together and sometimes overlap in ways. Structured Literacy explicitly and systematically
teachers students how to decode with strategies that are necessary for students that have dyslexia (Paul, 2018) but also benefits all students.
Strategies:
I use the Phonology in my classroom. While singing Good morning. I clap out the students names. Then we count how many Syllables are in the students name. We also talk about the Morning Message. We count how many words are in the sentence. I make sure I put a dot underneath each word in the sentence.
Depending on how big you want to make the game, you might need to make 2 or even 3 sets of letter squares. Using only lowercase letters, write the letter or letters that you want to work with on each sheet of paper with a black marker. I always use
lowercase letters so that I don’t confuse the kids.

How to Play It
The teacher will lay out the letter squares like a big giant game board. The teacher will make any design they want, and best is to change it up from time to time to keep it fresh. Have your student stand at the very front of the game. The child will roll the dice. They then jump on each square. Once they have moved the number of spaces they rolled, they should name the letter aloud and tell you the sound that it makes.
So for example, if the teacher roll a 3, I will jump on 3 spaces. On the third space I will name the letter and the sound aloud. The teacher makes a beginning start line and an end finish line. Whoever gets to the end finish line first wins. This game can be played after each reinforcement lesson as a practice game or also as a reward. Or…..The teacher can also play this game with your kids that are in the higher Orton-Gillingham levels by making them jump on letter teams (ea, ie, ou, ph, kn, etc.).
