Discussion 1 Dyslexia is a learning disability where students have difficulty being able to read due to problems having the identify the speech sound and learning how to relate to letters and words (Dyslexia-Symptoms and Causes, 2022). Dyslexia is also called having a reading disability because it is a result of different individual areas in the brain that processes language (Dyslexia-Symptoms and Causes, 2022). In my classroom use hands on learning. We are an inclusive classroom. We are not allowed to use worksheets per our Public Preschool Director/Coordinator. Everything is hands on learning. In my classroom we use multi-sensory learning. Multisensory learning is a teaching technique that helps to break down the barriers of absorbing added information, especially in abstract memorization sequencing or steps if learning Document Resume, n.d.) Multisensory technique learning uses the students visual, kinesthetic, auditory, and tactile learning (Document Resume, n.d.). I work with public preschool students. I have noticed we as their teachers are touching on the left hemisphere of the brain for reading. The left side of the brain for Math. Monday and Tuesdays we are doing literacy throughout the day. Wednesdays and Thursdays we do math throughout the day. Friday we can touch on any. But we use multisensory learning through teaching Literacy and Math. One that comes to mind for literacy is in Sand. The sand trays help to provide the students with kinesthetic practice for prewriting letter formation and letter practice (Tips and Uses for Multisensory Sand Toys, n.d.). While the students trace the letters in the sand, they are saying the letter sounds. For example, letter S; S /s/. I also have a supportive classroom culture (Blue, 2021). I make sure each student is equal. I do not judge my student. I meet the students where they are and go from there. I have so many students on various levels of needs. I am there to be the students light in such a dark world. I will do anything to help my students learn and grow.
I use technology (Jay, 2016) in my classroom. I do not overuse technology either. We are of a different generation. Meeting the students where the students are important. A lot of students have the technology to be their babysitter. Which is sad. That is a whole different story. I let my students play abcya on the computer. Which abcya has educational math and literacy games. I had to teach the students how to use the mouse pad. Most of them went to touch the screen. I thought was the cutest. I want my students to be successful. If that means taking time to teach them how to use the mouse, I will do it. The students love using technology for educational reasons only. We also use stories on the digital media. I read books also. But using different references touches different children. References Blue, J. (2021, April 20). Students need to learn how to
notice and shape their spoken words into parts which includes syllables, onset-rime and phonemes (Reading Rocket, n.d.). Phonemic awareness is having the ability to manipulate and identify the sounds individually (phonemes) in the spoken words (Reading Rocket, n.d.). Phonological awareness has the umbrella of terms which all cover the awareness of the sounds in speech (Knowledge that sounds make up onset rimes, onset rhymes makeup syllables, syllables make up words) and skills that are advanced such as manipulation (substituting, deleting, reversing) of words (Kung, n.d). Phonological awareness is important for reading children and adults have to have the awareness of sounds segments and blend words together which helps in reading and spelling (Kung, n.d.) Students and adults have to have the knowledge of the sound to helps the students to decode words (sounding them out, pairing sounds to segment), and this helps children read unfamiliar words (Kung, n.d.). Phonological awareness is an Umbrella term which represents a sequence of abilities that grow over time (Kung, n.d.). In my classroom we use Heggerty (Early Pre-kindergarten Phonemic Awareness Curriculum, n.d.). Heggerty is a well-organized thirty-five-week curriculum of daily phonemic awareness (Early Pre-kindergarten Phonemic Awareness Curriculum, n.d.). Heggerty is fast, effective, and fun. In my class we use Heggerty three times a week. I model and scaffold support for the students. The students learn to play with language and hear sounds in spoken words (Early Pre-Kindergarten Phonemic Awareness Curriculum, n.d.). On my Morning Meeting message, I have dots underneath each word. This is Sentence Segmentation (Orpi, 2019). We read the sentence aloud and my kid of the day points to each word as we read. On Fridays we use emergent readers which are small printed out books. The sentence have dots underneath the sentence so students can point to the words. We use nursery Rhymes also. I sing them every day. Reference Early Pre-Kindergarten Phonemic Awareness Curriculum.
