1. What is empathetic identification? What are the benefits of empathy and perspective-
taking?
Empathetic identification involves allowing individuals to deeply connect with another person’s experiences, thoughts, and emotions, promoting empathy and understanding. The benefits of empathy and perspective-taking help reduce societal prejudices and stereotypes. Also, they promote positive intergroup attitudes by fostering appreciation for different experiences. Overall,
empathy and perspective-taking contribute to building more inclusive and empathetic societies.
2. Describe the difference between “imagine self” instructions and "imagine target” instructions.
The difference between "imagine self-instruction" and "imagine target instruction" is based on their focus. "Imagine self-instruction" involves focusing on another person's situation, imagining oneself as that person and experiencing their feelings. In contrast, "imagine target instruction" centers on understanding the situation and feelings of another person, without necessarily considering one's own emotions.
3. What were the key findings from the article by Dovidio and colleagues (2004) and the article by Shih and colleagues (2009)?
Dovidio and colleagues (2004) found that when White people watched a video about racial discrimination and imagined how the victim felt, they became less prejudiced against Black people. This was more effective than just watching the video without any specific instructions. Shih and colleagues found that a common ingroup identity could reduce prejudice towards a specific group, such as Asian Americans. They discovered that when White people were told that
all Americans faced the same threat from terrorists, they saw Asian Americans as part of their group more often. This made them less prejudiced against Asian Americans. The study also found that feeling like things aren't fair was important in reducing prejudice.
4. Describe the NCAA commercial “A Day in the Life of a Student Athlete".
The NCAA commercial describes what it's like to be a college student athlete. The video shows male college students waking up, going to class, attending training sessions, spending time with friends, playing games, going to the library, and then going to bed. It seems a bit too easy, especially considering how he smiles the entire time.
5. What were some of the concerns expressed by current and former athletes about the NCAA’s depiction of college student athletes?
The former and current athletes are concerned about how the NCAA depicts being a college student athlete as easy and stress-free. Being a student athlete means always being busy with training during school and break times. It's a full-time job. How can the NCAA help student athletes succeed outside of sports?
