2 Listening Skills The one story I like to read is Quiet Please, Owen McPhee by Trudy Ludwig. I like to read this to my nephew who doesn’t listen well or follow instructions. Now the story is about a kid who loves talking but he doesn’t listen very well, he doesn’t even follow instructions until one day he has laryngitis. Laryngitis is an inflammation in the voice box and that forced him to stop talking so then he had to listen more to people. The kid in the story is a young man and his name is Owen and he loves to talk. He interrupts people when they are talking because he doesn’t wait for a response. He is the person that talks to himself when he is by himself. He woke up one morning and couldn’t talk because he lost his voice. So he didn't have any choice but to be quiet and listen to the people around him talking. He was irritated by this and you could tell. My niece loves talking and isn't quiet. So I know how Owen is and is feeling. Listening skills are a big deal in the classroom. Also they are an essential part of the classroom as well. This will help the students with their education. The students need to listen so that they can listen to the instructions they are given to them so that they can learn from what the teacher said. They need to listen so that way they can listen and understand what instructions the teacher is telling them about their assignments and classwork. The teachers should be asking questions throughout what they are doing just to make sure that the students fully understand the story. Teachers should have questions posted for them which will target your objective to help and see if their listening skills are effective. Now the one success story that will show you the success of the communication is when the students are able to answer the questions correctly. As for the listening skills incorporated as a teacher you may stop a few times to give time for the students to digest each part of the story and give them the opportunity to answer each question that was given by the teacher. My host teacher before she reads the book she puts the word in a circle up
3 Listening Skills on the board and has the students tell her what they know about it. So a couple weeks ago it snowed. Then she read the story to the student and stopped and asked questions about the book, characters, and setting. I think it is a good idea because then she gets to see what prior knowledge they have before reading the book. There is a listening activity. The activity that can be played is like a modified version of the telephone. My host teacher plays this game with her students. They did it two weeks ago when I was there and I thought it was fun. I got into it with them. So the first round when we did it everyone was talking through doing anything to make it loud in the classroom. When it got to the last person it wasn’t as close as the first person said. Then the second round came around and the room was silent so then we did the opposite way and went around the room. When the room was completely silent, that is when the goal was accomplished by the students listening closely and by the time we were able to get to the end we had the same two words that we started with. I chose a book and when I did it gave the student the opportunity to reflect on how important it is to listen and empathize with other people. When it comes to the students working in a quiet learning environment they work better and focus more. I hope that this lesson helps the students take so much out of it. My host teacher loves when the students work in a quiet place because she said they get more done. If they could conclude that if they sit quietly and work at your own pace you learn better. I am a believer of that.
