As a training and development manager, the four soft skills that I feel would benefit me the most would be self-management, communication, problem solving, and learning/adaptability skills. I feel self- management would benefit this career field most because as a developer, the job could call to build a new lesson plan or training and that would require dedication and drive. The expectation is to effectively come up with a plan for all to follow in accordance with guidelines of the company to ensure compliance. Communication skills will be key to relaying that information. It will require vertical and lateral communication to make sure thorough development is given and received. Problem-solving is what will allow us to identify and correct training deficiencies. We must have the ability to spot issues within a company to know what to address and how to implement corrective actions. This skill will heavily rely on the first two skills, self-management and problem solving to ensure success. The last skill, that will bring this all together is learning and adaptability. I believe that to be a great leader, you must be a great follower first. When entering a new company, it is not always best to immediately make change. This can cause problems within the organization and with current employees who may feel that the current way is the best way and may resist to change. My recommendation for this is to come in and learn how things are currently working first. Learning the correct way things are supposed to be done and why they are done that way. Once I have achieved this, then I can adapt to make more effective corrections. In my life, one person who stands out by having the four skills that I have listed would be my Mother. I didn’t always appreciate the message, but I always respected the messenger. Now that I look back on life and the things that I have experienced, and often it is her voice in my head keeping me on the right path and for that I will always be grateful. The two resources that I found that will benefit me the most are the career exploration and veteran federal and employment services. I intend to use these resources as I transition from the Air Force in a few years to help me find the right job for me.
