In AJR’s music video “Weak” the director Shane Drake makes a detailed music video exploring the different themes of vulnerability and emotional struggle and the complications of weakness and strength in being weak. One of the biggest aspects of the "Weak" music video is its skillful use of color palette and lighting to convey emotional depth. Drake uses muted colors with shades of gray and blue and very dim lighting throughout the music video, however, Drake brings back the color and more lighting near the end when he is empowered, and where it jumps an octave. We can see this type of muted color scheme thirty-five seconds into the music video and the colors coming back near the end of the music video. As the video progresses, Drake uses subtle shifts in lighting to help match with moments of emotional intensity, such as the chorus around fifty seconds into the video, where bursts of warm light pierce through the darkness. Using these combinations of muted colors and different color palettes, Drake paints a picture of how these visual signals not only highlight the song's themes as they unfold but also emphasize the contrast between weakness and strength in being weak.
