As a Special Education Teacher, I learned how important it is to collaborate with other special education teachers, peers within your school and parents. I have learned that everyone who works with the student in question must always be in constant communication almost on a daily basis in order to ensure that the child obtains his goals and reaches his full potential. I have also learned how crucial it is to do constant interventions and modifications to a students behav- ioral plan or academic programs; Especially, if there is no progress for a certain period of time. Any change must be known to all parties who interact with the student and evidence based prac- tices prove this to be helpful and beneficial for students. In my years of teaching, I have always said that as educators within the field of special education, we should always teach around how a student learns, even if it is not traditional methods of teaching, and never have it be the other way around. Our job as educators is to serve our students needs. Evidence-based decisions and prac- tices can be very informative and helpful, but all students learn differently, so in my experience a lot of practices are trial and error on a daily basis. What might work for one student, might not work for another; so although evidence-based practices are great to be informed about and tested, sometimes some research-based practices do not always apply to all students across the board. A practice that comes to mind that I have used in the past that has shown to be effective is research- to-practice gap practices. It is particularly consequential in special education, as learners with and at risk for disabilities require highly effective instruction to achieve their goals and attain success in and out of school (Bateman & Yell, 2019). I believe that teachers are not well trained to understand the importance of evidence based practices and how to implement them. On the other hand, there are some research findings that can be confusing and errors have been found in their findings. I do appreciate that in teach- ing we have the ability to use different methodologies and put them into practice. This is another
reason why I find collaboration with your peers to be beneficial when teaching, because other teachers might have different insight on a student that you might not have thought about and vice versa. I experienced a lot of challenging students in my years and I will always be thankful I had my peers to help and collaborate with. I will say that in my experience in the field of special edu- cation, my recommendation to help bridge the gap between research-to-practice is to have spe- cial education teachers understand the importance of each student learning differently because they all are on different academic levels. They can do this by each student having their own indi- vidualized workbook and goals. This is best practiced by having 1-1 direct instruction in my opinion; that way each student gets the individual attention they need in order to excel to their full potential. References Bateman, D.
