Strategies for Effective Conflict Management. According to Marsen (2020), conflict is a common incident within the healthcare industry, particularly when diverse personalities, role assumptions, relationships, and communication styles come into play. A concise example of this type of conflict involves a situation in a mental health unit in a hospital. Here, the police brought a patient into the unit on a mandatory legal hold, who was unhappy that he had not seen a physician yet. As time went by and his frustration grew, the man became increasingly loud with his comments and eventually started to yell out demands to see an onsite supervisor. In this situation, the patient and healthcare personnel need to find an appropriate resolution that meets all parties' needs, if possible. Communication strategies such as active listening and acknowledging emotions can help create better outcomes in these situations. According to Promsri (2019), the Thomas-Kilmann Index presents five responses to disagreements: avoiding, accommodating, compromising, collaborating, and competing. Anxiety, fear, poor communication, and miscommunications all contribute to the existence of such disputes. When facing a conflict, it is vital to identify the root cause and review our stance before declaring our goals out loud (Promsri, 2019). Being mindful of potential underlying issues can effectively aid us in resolving conflicts before they further escalate into irresolvable problems. Establishing a proper setting is an essential first step in designing a conflict resolution strategy for the above scenario. It shows that efforts are being made to understand the patient's needs and concerns, helping them to feel heard. This can lead to a better understanding of their condition or situation, which can pave the way for more productive conversations going forward.
According to Kayser & Kaplan (2020), compromise and collaboration are both critical elements of successful conflict resolution, as combining the perspectives of all parties involved will often create mutually beneficial goals and solutions. In this case, a compromise could focus around when the patient can go home, while collaboration would involve identifying the care goals that benefit all parties. References Kayser, J.
