Research Project: Peer Learning and Reflection
Peer 1 Jessie Mace and Gender Bias in Promotion
Decisions List THREE specific
takeaways (i.e., AHAs) about decision making that you learned from viewing this peer’s presentation.
That women are paid less and less likely to be promoted over their male counterparts, which. I find to be insane at this day and age.
Gender biases can directly correlate to Kahneman’s theory of the systems because the failure of system two can cause an “incorrect or inaccurate belief”.
Implicit biases are based on cultural beliefs that can be obtained in the workplace and glass ceiling effects allow for there to be a certain point women can no longer be promoted. All ideals that I am shocked are still occurring today.
Peer 2 Kiley Horn and Decision Making with those on the Autism Spectrum
List THREE specific
takeaways (i.e., AHAs) about decision making that you learned from viewing this peer’s presentation.
She quoted Kahneman, “People tend to underestimate losses and overestimate benefits.” As I work with kids on the spectrum I could not
agree more!
Those on the spectrum make more rational decisions. This is because they are neurotypical. I do see my kids at work making more reasonable decisions based on what is put in front of them and less emotional based decisions.
ASD are trackers and consider all their options I have run trials at work
giving behavioral therapy and see my kids using their eyes to consider all their options before they select their decision instead on intuitive decision making.
Peer 3 Amanda Hickman and
Emotions in Juror Decision Making Process
List THREE specific
takeaways (i.e., AHAs) about decision making that you learned from viewing this peer’s presentation.
Given that system one and two are involved in all processes and not only gender effects but that of emotions as well.
Mock trials seem to be of extreme significance and anger is extremely influential in determining someone’s verdict and results in more death sentences.
Emotion Evoking Evidence is essential to evoke negative emotions to work in victim’s favor.
Self-
Reflection A
My research most defiantly deepened my understanding of not only trial outcome, but how something so insignificant can affect that of a person’s verdict. In my opinion going into research, I thought that gender could not
have that much effect on one’s perspective on another and yet I was proven to be wrong. I think it’s absolutely preposterous to judge someone based on gender and not the crime they are being ultimately on trial for. As I have not been a part of trial, I cannot say that I would not subconsciously due the same. But doing this research project also brought me to the conclusion that I have come to so many times. That being that people typically only use that of system one when decision making. That is that system one is judging someone
for the crime based on their gender and not the crime itself. If one was using reasoning and system one as well as two, I feel they would consider all the aspects of the crime and not choose a verdict based on gender. Such as sexual assault cases just because a man is the defendant does not mean it is any less of
a crime, but studies show that females as victims are more likely to get a verdict in their favor rather than a male victim. Which I find to be immorally wrong, or the own gender biased that a jury member is more likely to make decision depending on if the victim is the same as their gender there is a higher
likelihood, they will decide in their favor.
Self-
Reflection B
All the peer interactions were extremely insightful and could almost all relate to the topic I had I took most to that of Jessie Mace’s due to her’s being gender
based I felt as if it was most easily correlated to my particular presentation. As mine touched on including the LGBTQ+ community I thought to ask her the same. If she had found any research on this and if so, was there an abundance of this. As my research there was not much, and I felt as if there should be more inclusion of these types of studies to make sure the equality is reached for in my case trial outcomes. As well as in Jessie Mace’s case with her topic being promotions. The next of the most similar research project was that of Amanda Hicks and her presentation of Emotions in jurors’ decision making. She also stressed the massive importance of system one and two which I thought to be massively reassuring and important in all aspects especially in that of trial. I also found it to be extremely interesting the ability of the attorneys and or lawyers who use such things as gruesome photos of victim and or defendant to get jurors to feel certain types of emotions to work the decision of the trial in their favor.
