What do you find most interesting about the skill of listening? I found Julian Treasures TED Talk very interesting and knowledgeable. It was fascinating to hear someone say my thoughts out loud Because a lot of the times we are speaking to someone, we get interrupted by our phones in some way. Treasure states at the beginning of his talk, "we spend roughly 60 percent of our communication time listening but we're not very good at it. We retain just 25 percent of what we hear" (TED Global, 2011). It was surprising to hear but then again not so surprising as some people only half pay attention to what you're talking about especially if their mind is not there in the moment with you. I also found it interesting how Treasure wrote a novel about these things and just how important it is to listen to others. Do you agree with Treasure’s warning about the dangers of losing the ability to listen? Yes, I agree with Treasure's point about the hazards of losing the ability to listen to others or just in general. Treasure focuses on the importance of teaching listening skills and the benefit it has overall. "Let's get listening taught in schools, and transform the world in one generation to a conscious, listening world - a world of connection, a world of understanding, and a world of peace" (TED Global, 2011). In order to connect and understand one another, we need to know how to listen, the information we absorb, and how we respond to others. Thus, the use of communication skills is a basic strategy of survival for students, teachers, and parents. "Together with critical thinking, cooperation, and creativity, they shape the teaching environment of an education system to prepare children appropriate for their future professional life. Thus, the use of communication skills is a basic strategy for the correct communication behavior for students, teachers, and parents. The use of basic communication skills between teachers and parents reinforces students' school performance and the relationships of mutual trust among students, teachers, and parents" (Chatzinikola, 2021). Teaching communication skills to children is an extremely important. We are slowly losing the ability to listen to others which is why it is more important than ever to force these teachings onto children so that they can improve throughout their life. What listening strategy presented by Treasure would you like to try? After completing the listening assessment, I discovered that I need significant work on my listening skills. I found that in difficult circumstances,
my ability to listen is frail. Julian Treasure provides many strategies to improve how one can listen and I would like to implement one of them in my day to day life to improve. The strategy I want to implement that Treasure provided is spending a few minutes a day listening to complete silence. "Just three minutes a day of silence is a wonderful exercise to reset your ears and to recalibrate, so that you can hear the quiet again" (TED Global, 2011). References: Chatzinikola, M. (2021).
