Can social media like Facebook be Addictive? Why or Why Not?
Social media, especially Facebook, has become an integral part of modern-day communication. While many people use it to stay connected with family and friends, there is a growing concern that social media platforms are highly addictive. Social media addiction can be broadly defined as excessive use of social media that interferes with daily activities and causes negative effects. It is well documented that excessive social media use is associated with negative effects such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Moreover, research has shown that social media use stimulates the brain’s reward system, leading to the release of dopamine. This suggests that social media use can be addictive. However, not all studies confirm this. Lin and colleagues (2016) found that social media use does not necessarily lead to addiction, especially when it is used for socializing and entertainment purposes. Another study by Kuss and
Griffiths (2017) suggests that it is not social media per se that causes addiction, but the way people engage with it. They identified six components of addiction: salience, mood modification,
tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, conflict, and relapse. These components are like
those found in
substance addictions and are more likely to be present in individuals who have negative social media experiences, such as cyberbullying. The Bible cautions against addiction. (1 Corinthians 6:12), which highlights the importance of self –control and moderation in all areas of life. The Bible teaches that true freedom comes from overcoming temptation and pursuing God’s will. Therefore, it is advisable to use social media responsibly and in moderation. In conclusion,

excessive social media use can have negative effects on mental health and well-being. While some studies suggest that social media use can be addictive. It is important to note that addiction is a complex phenomenon that depends on several factors. Therefore
, responsible use of social media is key to avoiding addiction and its negative consequences.
