Class, I am going to give some personal background so that you can better understand how this course has affected me personally. I have a 20-year-old daughter who lives with a learning disability. My daughter has been diagnosed with Dyslexia, ADD, Auditory Processing Disorder and low working memory. This means she is slow to read, and understand what she has read. While conversing she is easily distracted has trouble understanding what the other person is saying and can even forget mid conversation what the heck we are even talking about. This course has reiterated how difficult noise can be for someone like my daughter or even for individuals with mild symptoms that make regular communication difficult. We work and interact with individual’s every day that maybe experiencing issues due to Psychological noise like a preoccupation with personal issues. Physical noise can be issues such as a loud environment, which makes it difficult to concentrate, lighting or even an uncomfortable temperature. Semantic noise is something a new employee may feel when a veteran employee begins to use company or business jargon that is unfamiliar or like my daughter who has a limited vocabulary can find herself quite confused when others do not speak in simple terms. I have learned a lot from my daughter in regards to how she receives a message. Mostly I have learned how to be a better communicator though patience and speaking in simple terms – I do this for everyone I meet. I have no desire to sound smart at the risk of not communicating well. I appreciate that the text articulated and categorized the different types of noise so that I can be more aware when trying to effectively communicate.
