Discussion 8: Week 8
Compare and contrast cultural humility and cultural inclusion. Provide a scenario from your professional practice and differentiate between the two. As a practitioner, how can you connect the two when working with families?
Going back to week seven’s discussion about cultural humility, cultural humility is defined as an all-time progression of self-reflection and self-critique whereby the individual not only learns about another’s culture, but one starts with an investigation of his/her own beliefs and cultural identities (
Tervalon & Murray-Garcia., 1998;
Yeager & Bauer-Wu., 2013). Tervalon & Murray-Garcia. (1998), stated that when it comes to cultural humility, it is best defined not as separate end point but as a promise and active engagement in an enduring process that people enter on an ongoing basis with patients, communities, colleagues and with themselves (
Yeager & Bauer-Wu., 2013). With this, we need to be aware of our own values and beliefs that come from the combination of the various cultural influences of our own culture and various cultures around us to not only better understand ourselves, but to hopefully understand other’s cultures and wellbeing. Now with cultural inclusion, it is defined
as an act of including people from various cultures in the same environment and providing them with equal opportunities. This basically means that in the world that we live in, we need to include diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). When bearing in mind a guarantee of DEI, it is significant to assess the variety of variables that make up an individual’s culture, age, ethnicity, gender identity, race, religion, and socioeconomic status (Beulieu et al. 2019; Hilton
et al., 2021). The information that I gain from reading different scholarly articles is that the similarities between cultural humility and cultural inclusion is that they both include taking the time and effort to acknowledge different people’s cultures other than their own. This means that when organizations such as medical facilities (hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, rehab facilities, ABA clinics), government offices, and other diverse environments are willing to help serve. These two “characteristics” go together, without cultural humility, there would not be cultural inclusion and vice versa. In order to better our world/environment, we have to let go of our ego and be willing to open our minds to accept and learn about different cultures and such as coming together regardless of gender, sex, religion, ethnicity and so on to bring about equality. The differences between the two are that with cultural humility is that we need to recognize it as that there is no superior culture, but each culture can offer something. Different
cultures offer unique contingency environments that mold and influence people’s behaviors (Fong et al.,2017). Cultural inclusion values the contributions of all cultures and works to build a place where everyone can feel wanted, respected and included. One wants us to learn
about other cultures other than our own and the other wants us to make everyone feel valued within each environment.
As an example of cultural humility in my years of working in ABA, is that I worked with a family who was a different culture than I was. At the time, it was during the winter holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) so upon reading the client’s information on their file and obtaining information from the supervisor(s) on the team I was informed about their culture and what important things to know regarding what things to say and not to say. The family I worked with was a different religion. As in my previous post, they did not celebrate any birthdays or other holidays that majority of people in the U.S. celebrates like Christmas and such. I had to make sure that I said, “happy holidays and when were you born?” To be honest, it was a little hard, but I knew that before I would say anything I would have to take a moment to ask or say anything in those instances. I worked on gaining more knowledge on their culture so I would not do or say anything that will make the client or/and their family not
feel any uneasiness while having me there. With cultural inclusion, I continually work on making sure that I use everyday language when I work with the clients and their families, so they understand what I am saying and trying to do with the intervention plan(s). With working
with the families and clients I would also be open to any questions or concerns that they may have so I can address them if I am able to or have them refer to getting in contact with my supervisors. I would also make sure that when I work with a group of clients who are in the clinic regardless of age or gender, I make sure that everyone is involved in things such as group games or activities.
As an ABA practitioner, we have to be able to connect with our clients and their families regardless of culture, religion, race, ethnicity, etc in order to provide adequate care for our clients. We need to be willing to be open and learn about our clients and their families;
adapt when it is necessary. I personally strive to always be culturally inclusive and have cultural humility, because with each day can be a day to open our minds and learn.
