What are the benefits of collaborative learning?
According to Salmons (2019) “
… collaboration is the synthesis of multiple processes that
involve both individual and group efforts. While collaboration is widely discussed, existing
resources often refer to it in a simplistic way and make overly broad distinctions between
collaborative and individual work. “Learning to collaborate, collaborating to learn” approaches
recognize the role of individual reflection and sense-making as essential to collaboration in an
educational context” (Salmons
, 2019, p.3). In my understanding, we can say that collaborative
learning is much more than just meeting a student who participates in the same class we are in,
but having the opportunity to meet other people from different parts of the world, learn new
things about cultures and put ourselves in the world. And from that, we will be able to
understand other types of understandings and ideas and debate these ideas in a didactic way.
Evaluating another person is a way of learning from them, since to evaluate we must understand
at least what we are talking about. Being evaluated by someone other than the teacher also
encourages us to work with more quality in our tasks. How does University of the People integrate community-oriented learning into the
classroom? The University of the People works with a peer-assessment method in which students can
evaluate each other's work, give grades, give suggestions and feedback. This somehow makes the
students connect more with each other and stop being just an online study and become more like
a face-to-face class. We also have access to our teacher to answer any questions we may have
and somehow have a more efficient learning.
As my native language is not English, I had to take the English Composition module, so I had the
opportunity to connect with people from all over the world, assess the progress of other students,
learn from them about specific things about the culture. of them and somehow being part of their
trajectory.
