Phase One
Question 1
Identify which Play Episode/Topic you’ve chosen and discuss how this project would be “meaningful and relevant” to the children, and how the children would “gain direct experience with the topic of the project” (George Brown College, 2016, p. 2).
Advice & Tips for Success
Use quotations from the Project Approach Handout
(2016) and How Does Learning Happen?
(2014) and chosen play scenario
to explain how to plan meaningful curriculum.
In your answer, describe the child care context, the neighborhood and surrounding community; you can select a location from past placements (also See Dim Sum example). Why are you implementing a project approach?
Continue to refer to selected play episode chosen scenarios and from Phase One Common Experience provided to make your answer clear.
Building a Base of Common Knowledge
During Phase One, Early Childhood Educators build a basis of common knowledge among the children. It assures that all children have the knowledge base and prior learning necessary to benefit from the in-depth investigation of Phase Two. Question 2

d)
Select one common experience listed above and describe how a small group of children would use the play materials and vocabulary in Phase 1 of the project. Write an anecdotal observation
of this imagined play episode that shows children using the play material/books/artifacts and provide verbal dialogue of the play showing the newly introduced materials and vocabulary (1 paragraph). e)
Identify and describe the Habit of Mind
that would be practiced during anecdotal observation
(1 paragraph).
Question 3
Draw a
“
What We Know” web. Write the topic in the centre and add four (4) strands with examples of what children know at the beginning of the project. Advice & Tips for Success
Ensure that the web has age appropriate facts that children may know at the beginning of the project. Consider the common experiences provided to build a basis of common knowledge among the children about the chosen topic.
Re-read the topic description for your project to start thinking about what children might know about the topic as the project gets under way

Question 4
Draw an “
Our Questions” web. Write the topic in the centre and add four (4) strands with questions that children want to investigate. These four (4) questions will guide your curriculum planning. Advice & Tips for Success
Ensure that the questions are age appropriate and will guide the investigation and children’s learning (Keep in mind the evidence of research, the common experiences that children participated in).
Avoid yes/no response questions
.
Questions need to have a logical connection to the facts on the “
What We Know” web. Remember that you will scaffold the learning discovered in phase one. Phase Two
Main Features of Phase Two are:
Preparation for the field trip
Field trip
Major Construction
Expert Visitor to help children with their Major Construction
Activities to document project questions & new knowledge
Question 5
Identify the Field Trip Site and describe the Field Site Host who will answer the children’s questions & allow them to explore. Research real life sites. Include names and contact numbers. Discuss preparation for Field Trip. This will create an opportunity to engage families (not just inform, but engaged families). (3 paragraphs).
Question 6
Using your previous ‘
Our Questions’
web, create a third Web adding three (3) Field Trip Questions
which the children will ask during the field trip.
Question 7
Describe in detail how you and the children will be prepared to represent, collect information and document during
the Field Trip. a)
The children will…(provide at least 3 examples of varied forms of representation during the trip)
And discuss how children will use the new gathered material to continue the in-
depth investigation of the topic when they return back to the center)
b)
The Educators will … (provide at least 2 forms of documentation educators will use during the field trip.
And discuss how they will use this upon returning to child care.

c)
How can families be involved in Field Trip? Be specific. What roles they can play during the field trip? Advice & Tips for Success
Describe multiple forms of representation and ways of collecting information, relevant to the project & developmentally appropriate.
Explore the use of technology to document and share the learning
Question 8
In the days and weeks following the Field Trip, the children will design and build a major construction. a)
Describe how the children and ECE teachers collaborated in selecting the large construction. Note the decision-making process of their construction/arts materials and building. (Approximately 3 paragraphs).
b)
Identify Cognitive, Literacy skills, and Social skills from the Continuum of Development or Expectations from the Kindergarten Program. Provide evidence, specific examples (imagine the decision making process, the building process that would support the above skills) (approximately 3 paragraphs). c)
Identify and discuss the Habit of Mind that would be practiced in Phase two? 1 paragraph. Advice & Tips for Success
A major construction is a large construction
logically connected to the project topic that is completed by a group of children over time and requires collaboration. For example, if the project topic is F
IRE
T
RUCK
, a major construction would be building a large fire truck from appliance boxes.
The large size of the major construction and the extended length of time that it takes to build it involve many skills and opportunities for problem solving and collaboration. Ensure you discuss cognitive, literacy and social skills in the building process.
A food experience is not a major construction.
A small 3D model is not a major construction.
Question 9
Identify an Expert Visitor who contributes in the following ways:
a)
Their name, expertise, community affiliation, 2 (two) artifacts they will bring that children can explore to further they investigation (be specific)
b)
Describe the conversation between Visitor & children, specifically related to their Web Questions (use quotations, include a sample of a dialogue).
Project Approach Template Curriculum Theory 2019-2020
c)
Contributions/advice to the children about their major construction.
Advice & Tips for Success
Ensure that the materials/artifacts can be used by children to further their investigation (provide example of how).
Ensure that you tell how
the parent / expert and the materials contribute to children's problem solving and inquiry. Question 10
Using your previous Webs 2 & 3
create a new, Web 4
titled- What we have learned
adding four (4) new items that the children would have learned during Phase Two of their project. Write one paragraph providing evidence for each web strand listed. Advice & Tips for Success
Ensure that the items listed are a result of learning in Phase Two and that they are logically connected to your project, specifically the questions listed on the “Our Questions” web
Logical connections between the four new items and the existing items on the “What We Know” web should be clear. Phase Three
Main Features of Phase Three
personalizing new knowledge
reviewing the outcomes of the project both representations and documentation, evaluating these and choosing which will be included in the culminating event
choosing a form for the culminating event
organizing/preparing the environment/ rehearsing for the culminating event
the culminating event & activities Possible Culminating Events and components include:
exhibits
role-play in play environment
history of the project presentations presented in different ways
reports presented in different ways
plays, dramas, music

individual scrapbooks presented in different ways
presentations of important elements and personally meaningful aspects of the project
open house for parents and other community members e.g. museum
logically connected events, for example, after a project on bakeries the culminating event could include a bake sale where the processes go to a local food bank and children lead a food activity and serve the event guests
Question 11
Reflect on the Project and create examples from each Phase:
a)
Showing how families were involved
throughout the Project. b)
In detail discuss a Culminating Event that best suits the topic of your project. c)

How can this be shared with families who were not able to participate? Ie technology, electronic communication…..
f)
Identify and discuss What Habit of Mind is practiced in phase 3
(6 paragraphs)
Advice & Tips for Success
Be specific in your examples of family involvement in each phase, including how families contributed to the Culminating Event.
A food activity is not a culminating event.
Include how you can use technology to share with families who attend the Event, and families who can’t attend.
Consider how children can take a lead.
Question 12
Provide one (1) way in which you could connect back with the members of Community who contributed to the investigation e.g., a field trip, field visitor. Ensure that the contributors receive tangible examples of documentation and representation that ‘makes visible’ children’s learning and show how it was enhanced by the community’s involvement. Advice & Tips for Success
Involve/collaborate with children (e.g., children’s representations)
Include community members who were involved in the project.
