Summary
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of Tier-2 reading fluency interventions affiliated with at risk students in third grade. The interventions will focus solely on reading capabilities and motivation. The participants in the study 1,458 third-grade students. The students were given a pre-test for the study at the beginning of the school year to determine at-
risk students. In order to qualify as an at-risk learner, a student needed to score one standard deviation below the mean. Following the pre-test, the study narrowed down its focus to 345 students who were all located in Portugal. The 345 students were divided into two groups: intervention group (162 students) and delayed intervention group (183 students). An additional third group was created as well to support the study. Students from the initial pre-test were selected at random coming to a total of 225 students in the third group. The research design for this study was quasi-experimental. It is a quasi-experimental study because there was a pre-test and post-test provided to the participating groups. The groups were not selected at random, which makes it quasi-experimental in nature. The study used multiple measures of data collection regarding reading accuracy, reading fluency, and reading motivation. The researchers used Test of Word Reading to determine reading accuracy. This computerized test was used as the pre-test and post-test. O Rei was used to assess reading accuracy and fluency. Children were required to read aloud a 281-word text in three minutes. For
each word that was read correctly per minute, it was calculated towards measuring fluency. Lastly, the “Me and Reading” scale was used as a method of data collection. This scales was used to determine reading motivation through a 20-item questionnaire. It focused on pleasure from reading and self-concept as a reader.

The data was analyzed using
IBM SPSS Statistics 28. This was used to create a mean score to determine reading fluency and motivation. ANOVA was then used to compare the intervention group and the delayed intervention group. The results of the study concluded that there was an improvement in reading fluency and reading accuracy. When the intervention group
was compared to the control group, it showed improvement in both clusters. However, it is noted
that the improvement was not proportioned. Analysis
There are opportunities that can be addressed when referring to future research. For example, future studies could compare the interventions that took place here to another intervention tool that was deemed as effective. Another suggestion would be to incorporate different learning strategies throughout the intervention process. This could help identify the most effective approaches. There are threats to validity. One threat could be the delayed control group. This threatens validity because the interventions were not started at the same time as the intervention groups were. This could cause maturation effects. This study aims to support reading foundations. Reading fluency and accuracy is imperative to support student success. When struggling with either, it is crucial that interventions
must take place immediately. Studies like these help educators determine the best possible approach to support at-risk learners. With the study showing that there was somewhat of a gap bridged, it proves that interventions do work. This allows educators to make informed decisions on tier instruction in their classrooms. Educators can gain insights on how to defeat these disparities through research studies that address the deficits young readers may be facing.
