Introduc1on
We’re familiar with snowflakes, but how much do we really understand about what a snowflake is and how it forms?
This is not a recent arDcle, but it does a nice job of explaining some of the different types of snowflakes. Snow is ice, which is technically a mineral. So this arDcle touches on two different units we will be covering in this class: the unit on rocks and minerals, and the unit on weather. I’ve decided to assign this news arDcle early, though, because of the winter weather and the snow we’re experiencing this month.
As you will read in this arDcle, snowflakes come in two general forms: relaDvely flat 6-pointed plates
and more 3-dimensional 6-sided columns
. It turns out that the condiDons under which they form determine whether they develop as plates or as columns. This is exciDng! It means we could go outside and catch snowflakes as they fall — and learn something about how cold and humid the air is above us.
