Rebecca Quinones Date: 09/17/2023 IDS-105- Awareness & Online Learning Scenario 1 – School Schools can be very diverse with students coming from all different backgrounds economically, culturally, and learning styles, coming together for the same goal to learn. Part One: Social Justice To explain the difference of justice, fairness, and equality in school you have to know what they mean. Justice is treatment that is fair and neutral for anyone under the law. Fairness is treating people equally and neutrally without judgment or bias. Equality is the idea that everyone should be given the same treatment and opportunities as everyone else regardless of their differences. In a school setting justice, fairness, and equality are very important because it shapes the students in knowing right or wrong. Justice gives students a voice who have been bullied to speak up. It shows how certain actions have consequences. Fairness allows both parties to be heard, it allows students to make decisions free of judgment or discrimination. Equality allows students opportunities they might not have thought were possible for them. It allows everyone to be inclusive. Bias can influence my perception of social justice in schools because as a kid you soak up all the knowledge like a sponge. You also pick up on certain social cues and experiences. Allowing you to take that knowledge through adulthood. However, not everyone has the same resources and setup for success. Resulting in judgment and preconceived notions. Different narratives in society can impact my perception of social justice because different experiences or narratives connect people. It enables us to transfer knowledge, cultures, and
empathy for one another. It shows us how we can evolve, and how generations can keep building. Social narratives and historical narratives help us understand who we are and grant us opportunities to build a community. Access to resources in the school scenario should qualify all students to receive education that is equitable to everyone. Some resources may be school supplies, healthier school lunches, or even better transportation. Every school district is different so everyone's needs are different as well. Equity ensures that each school district gets the appropriate materials they need based on their socioeconomic backgrounds. Participation ensures students a voice to feel safe and heard, it grants them freedom to express themselves. Diversity is within the school, it teaches students to protect one another from discrimination because yes we are diverse but we are still equal. Human rights permit social justice within a school community to fair and just treatment. Having awareness of other cultures can improve and benefit schools because communication is the building block of learning. When I was in high school they made me take an ASL class. It helped the students who were hearing impaired communicate more easily with their classmates and teachers. Another way it can benefit schools is by being able to read body language, and interpreting how you see it. Sometimes children who have autism are nonverbal and they could try to communicate through body language. Being able to use interpersonal communication in schools is very beneficial for everyone involved. Exposing more diverse backgrounds can be a very positive influence on communication within a school. Diversity shows that things are more than just black and white, diversity helps build our social identities. By establishing those identities it can build relationships and eventually communities.
Awareness of diversity can be beneficial for collaboration in schools because it helps students with their identities. It can help them build better relationships with one another and can help them understand who they are. Seeing other cultures and how they express themselves can embarrass others to do the same. Having cultural fluency in a school scenario is very important because it teaches students how to communicate with one another. It teaches them the value of other people's beliefs and helps them show respect. For example, when the holidays are approaching, in certain cultures or religions they may not celebrate these holidays. However, we celebrate Halloween and Christmas in schools with parties or decorations. Instead of excluding those kids because they do not celebrate it or making anyone feel uncomfortable we could come together to understand their holidays. If I had a class I could use my cultural fluency to teach the students the history behind the holidays I celebrate and the holidays from different cultures. That way everyone has a better understanding of why someone doesn’t celebrate Christmas. Cultural Fluency is really about having a better understanding of someone else and using that to communicate and relate to others. I think knowing cultural fluency can benefit my self-awareness because I’d have a better understanding of other people and myself. In this scenario having cultural fluency in schools can be very beneficial to students as well as teachers. Having cultural fluency can help build a stronger community within the educational system and help everyone grow. If I had a better grasp of cultural fluency when I was in school it would have made it easier to make friends or encouraged me to join more clubs. Cultural fluency isn’t just about having a better understanding but taking accountability for your behaviors and attitudes and seeing how they affect others. The components of conflict represented in a school scenario can vary from personal differences, bullying, and differences in cultural values or beliefs.

Some interpersonal communication strategies that can resolve conflicts in schools are verbal and visual communication. Students are taught that words are powerful and that with a positive attitude, we can communicate with one another. Having personal or cultural differences can be okay only if both parties respect one another's beliefs. Visual communication can be a vital tool for student's learning. Visuals can be useful in resolving conflict because you can use symbols, graphs, and charts to convey a message. Some people say a picture can say 1000 words, but sometimes letting images talk can show a person a different perspective. The communication strategy I could employ in a school scenario would be visual communication. All day students are constantly looking at visuals to take in information, it may be on the internet at school, on their phones, or what they see on TV. Visual learning can be very powerful. It can be useful or it can even lead to consequences, it can show students or teachers what words can't describe. Potential challenges of communication in school settings with visuals can be a result of these images being misunderstood or misconstrued. These can be taken out of context if the visual messages aren't easily conveyed. In schools if certain posters or decorations are hung and some students feel offended due to different beliefs or values that can create a problem. Using restorative practices to navigate conflict in schools can be beneficial and create challenges as well. Conflicts can help students better understand both positions as well as make better decisions. However, it can also create splits between students and their communities with one another. It causes drifts in social groups that result in making all parties feel bad, lowering cohesiveness in society. When it comes to the factors that influence one’s perception of social justice, there are five things. Access to resources makes sure people with different socioeconomic statuses have equal
access to whatever resources they need. If they are unable to have access to resources that might change their perspective negatively. Equity is having the ability to distribute resources to different groups who are equitable in receiving them based on their own needs. If people in society don’t receive what they need, they may not feel safe to participate or speak on it. If we aren’t inclusive to everyone we can’t equally help out in society. Having diversity in society can be beneficial in many ways but it can also be the reason why certain groups or societies are unable to get the resources they need. Human rights should be inclusive to all people's rights, however, if people aren’t getting the resources they need they might not feel they have equal rights. The impact of intercultural competence on communication is important in society and daily life. It helps build mutual understanding and promote better communication skills. It also improves relationships between people of diverse backgrounds. Some strategies you could use to navigate conflict can be learning and understanding people's values and beliefs. Knowing can help build relationships and better communication. Learning different social cues like eye contact or certain greetings can help establish respectful boundaries.
