Use of Silence
Question 1
The first moment of silence in the conversation between the social worker and the client, the
support worker initiates communication by asking the client how her day is going. After posing
this question, there is a brief pause as the social worker gives the client space to process and
respond (Kumar, 2020). The second moment of silence occurs when the social worker asks the
client if she is comfortable talking about her situation. This question is sensitive and requires the
client to assess her own emotional readiness and willingness to open up (Kumar, 2020).
Question 2
These moments of silence were helpful to the interviewing process (Cummins & Sevel, 2017).
The client initially appeared to feel slightly uncomfortable in these moments, but as the silence
continued, she seemed to settle into it and use it as an opportunity for reflection.
Question 3
The first moment of silence occurred when the social worker asked the client about her day.
While this pause allowed the client time to gather her thoughts and reflect on her day, it did not
necessarily facilitate sharing information about her situation or concerns. The second moment of
silence allowed the client to consider her emotional readiness and willingness to share, and this
prompted her to disclose specific information about her situation. Therefore, in these particular
instances, the moments of silence played some role in helping the client share information about
her circumstances especially the second silence (Katz et al., 2012).
