CHE 360 Dr. Cimino Lab 2. Flash Distillation - Notes This document is meant to accompany Lab 2. Flash Distillation in Wankat (4th Ed.) beginning on pg. 74 in the textbook. There are some subtle differences between the interfaces of Aspen Plus v.8.8 (textbook directions) and our current version of Aspen Plus (v.10). Use these directions in conjunction with the textbook to complete the lab. PLEASE IGNORE ANY AND ALL REFERENCES IN THE LAB TO FURFURAL-WATER MIXTURES, WE ARE NOT DOING THESE PARTS. When logging in to Aspen Plus, please remember that you must first be connected to the aspenserver using CiscoAnyConnect VPN (remember to choose the Full Tunnel Library option). When Aspen is open, you will see a popup screen with several options for documents. Choose Installed Templates > Blank Simulation. General Instructions Follow the General Instructions. Please ignore the reference to “collecting equilibrium data.” Part 1. Simulations a. Follow the instructions for part a. Report your results for each V/F in your Lab memo, using the table below. Please use the units given in the table. Note, you will need to hand-calculate Q using the energy balance Q flash = H out - H in b. Skip part b. c. Skip part c. Part 2. Design Follow the directions listed in the Design section and use the NRTL method . Report your results in the Lab Memo using the following tables: V/F Feed T [C] Q [cal/sec] Drum T [C] y butane (mol fr.) X butane (mol fr.) V [kmol/hr] L [kmol/hr] 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 Feed T [C] Feed P [bar] Q [cal/sec] Drum T [C] Drum P [bar] V [kmol/hr] L [kmol/hr]
CHE 360 Dr. Cimino Lab 2. Flash Distillation - Notes Part 3. Bubble- and Dew-Point Determination a. Follow the directions for part a. Use NRTL. Report the equilibrium (bubble) temperature of the mixture at 10 bar in your memo. Note - you are setting P = 10 bar and V/F = 0 both in the FEED and in the drum itself. T bubble [C] = b. Skip part b. c. Skip part c. Part 4. Report the boiling point of pure n-hexane at 0.23 bar in your memo using NRTL. T BP [C] = Things to Submit: Follow the directions in the “Assignment to Hand In” section as a guide for your Lab Memo. Describe each of the tasks that you performed and support your results with data collected from ASPEN. Do not include ASPEN printouts or reports.
