SCI 100 Topic Exploration Graphic Organizer Link to Article: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/10/211008105736.htm Topic (Describe the topic discussed in your news story, providing details about the background of the topic.) The evolutionary relationship between humans and chimpanzees is remarkably like one another. Stem cell researchers have found that a previously overlooked part of our DNA, the Junk DNA, contributes to the main difference between humans and chimpanzees and believe that it might explain why our brains work differently despite all the similarities between us. Stem cell researchers in Sweden grew their own stem cells inside their own lab. The stem cells were then reprogrammed from the skin cells of other human beings. They were then developed into brain cells and once that was accomplished, they put them side by side to compare to the brain cells of chimpanzees. This is when researchers found that human and chimpanzees use a part of their DNA in diverse ways, which explains why and plays a significant role in the overall development of our brains. Main Idea (Identify the main idea or thesis in the news story you selected.) Researchers had found that both species used a particularly similar piece of DNA in separate ways. Due to using this piece of DNA in a unique way, researchers noticed that the key to figuring out what the difference between humans and chimpanzees lies in the brain. Supporting Evidence (Describe the evidence that supports the main idea or thesis of your news story.) 1) Using the stem cells, the researchers specifically grew brain cells from humans and chimpanzees and compared the two cell types. The researchers then found that humans and chimpanzees use a part of their DNA in separate ways. 2) The new findings indicate that the differences appear to lie outside the protein-coding genes in what has been labeled the “Junk” DNA. 3) This now suggests that the basis for the human brain’s evolution are genetic mechanisms that are more complex than what was previously
thought. Questions (Your questions should be based on the main idea and supporting evidence that you identified.) 1) Are there any other types of DNA that differs between humans and chimpanzees? 2) Why was the “Junk DNA” previously thought to be not important? 3) At what point can we expect to get a definitive answer on what makes humans human? Information (Identify the types of sources that you could use to find more information about the topic discussed in your news story and the questions you posed.) I believe that other academic journals could shine some light onto both the topic of my presented article but could answer all the questions I have presented. I also believe that searching for other academic articles made by other universities could help in delving in deeper on this subject as well.
