Calculate the amount of each compound present in a 75 mg sample of Excedrin, including the inactive ingredients. Please see the ODE OHFWXUH column for the FRPSRVLWLRQ RI ([FHGULQ . Chem 3AL, Fall 2022 Page 2 of 3 ¸² You will be generating 5 TLC plates throughout this experiment (see the procedure for what should be spotted in each lane). Predict what your 5 TLC plates would look like if each compound is separated perfectly (no mixed fractions). [Please note, this is just a prediction. You will still need to analyze your real TLC plates based on your fractions during the experiment.]
Chem 3AL, Fall 2022 Page 3 of 3 4 . The beginning of part 2, you will filter the Excedrin solution through a filter, and load it on top of the column. What was the purpose of filtering the solution through pipette filter? What solid was removed? 5 . When getting the TLC samples from the fractions onto the TLC plates, why is it important to drain the spotter into a paper towel before getting a new fraction’s sample? 6 . Why is it important to have an ice bath trap between our filter flask and the pump? What does the ice water bath physically accomplish? filtering the excedrin removes the inactive ingredients which are the binder/starch This is important so you don't cross contaminate between fractions . You need to drain the spotter to ensure you are only spotting the current fraction and not getting any residue from the last fracbon you spotted . It protects the pump because if you pull solvent vapor into the pump it could damage it . The ice bath makes sure that any solvent vapor that has made it that far condenses before it can cause damage .
