D A T A S H E E T Name. Janae Seays_____ Date. 01/16/2024_________ Lab Partner. Christyn Miles________________________ Instructor. Memari E X P E R I M E N T 1 Measurements: Mass, Volume, Density, and Boiling Point List all your step-by-step procedures for your mass, volume, and density determinations below. Where applicable, show all your calculations and remember to apply the significant figures rules. Part I—Measuring Mass 1. Measuring Mass Directly: Item Mass A single penny 2.499 g A 150 mL beaker 66.721g A nickel 4.969g A 100 mL graduated cylinder 119.590g A watch glass 49.854g 2. Measuring Out a Substance (Indirect Measurement): Determine the mass of the following, then record your measurements and write the procedure on how you measured the mass by indirect measurement a substance Procedure: exactly 2.750 g of sodium chloride I used the spatula to scoop the sodium chloride onto the scale until it read 2.750 g. exactly 5.000 g of calcium chloride I used the spatula to scoop the calcium chloride onto the scale until it read exactly 5.000 g
exactly 22.000 g of water I placed one sheet of weighing paper and an empty 50mL beaker onto the balance and pressed “Tare” to set the balance to zero, I then filled another 50mL beaker with DI water and slowly poured the water into the empty beaker on the scale until the scale displayed 20.000g. Lastly, I used a dropper to add drops of water and get the precise measurement until the balance displayed 22.000g. 3. Determine the Mass by Difference of the following, then record your measurements and write the procedure/or show calculations on how you measured the mass by difference: Procedure/ Calculations: 50 mL of water in a graduated cylinder I poured 50 mL of water in a graduated cylinder and put it on the scale to measure the mass. 1, 2, and 3 scoops of NaCl in succession using a spatula I put one scoop of the NaCI using the spatula onto the scale to measure the mass and repeated the same steps for scoops 2 and 3 1 scoop of CaCl 2 before and after it sits out on the lab bench for 15 minutes, where it will absorb moisture from the air. I used the spatula to put one scoop of CaCI2 onto the scale to measure the mass, I then took it off and set a 15-minute timer to come back to measure the mass again Part II—Measuring Volume 1. Volume determination, Read and record the volumes of the liquids in the following the set ups in the lab : Measuring Device Volume 10 mL graduated cylinder 6.9 mL 100 mL graduated cylinder 80.3 mL Liquid level in buret 10.1 mL
Beaker 65mL/165mL Erlenmeyer flask 115 mL 2. Show your calculation for measuring the volume of the following items based on procedure: Calculations: Volume of a 25 × 150 mm test tube: 100-40.2=59.8 Volume of a golf ball: Diameter: 4.10cm 4.10/2=2.05 4/3 *3.14(2.05) ^3=36.068 Volume = 36.068 Volume of about 20 pieces of zinc metal: 32-30=2.0 Volume = 2.0 Volume of air in an empty rectangular box: Length = 21 Width = 14.5 Part III—Determine the Density of the following Solids and Liquids at Room Temperature Calculations: Density of a golf ball: Mass: 46.236 Volume: 36.068 46.236/36.068 = 1.282 Density = 1.281 Density of the provided irregular- shaped solid: Mass: 63.374 Volume: 5 63.374/79 – 74 = 63.374/5 = 12.67 Density = 12.67 Density of Water (use about 10 mL): Mass: 46.400 Volume: 10 46.400/10 = 4.46 Density of the unknown liquid (A, B, or C) provided (use about 10 mL): Mass: 42.693 Volume: 10 42.693/10 = 4.27 Density= 4.27
