Chemical Bonding Fundamentals
TOTAL POINTS: 22 POINTS
EXPERIMENT 1: SLIME TIME
Hypotheses and Observations (4 points) Part 1
Slime Observations:
·
Pours out easily, holds together well, and breaks apart with little stretching but
only small tears. Feels cold to the touch.
Part 2
Hypothesis for Slime (Part 2, Step 3): Highlighter and the pen will be dissolved with slime.
Hypothesis for Silly Putty
® (Part 2, Step 8):
None of the inks will dissolve, but the newspaper ink will be “picked up”
and imprinted on the silly putty.
Part 3
Chromatography Observations:
Dry erase, pen, and permanent marker did not move.
The highlighter began to move as the water came in contact with it. Ended up moving to
the edge of the filter paper with the water.

Chemical Bonding Fundamentals
Post-Lab Questions (6 points) 1.
Did the slime pick up water soluble or water insoluble inks? From these results, what can
you conclude about the polarity of slime molecules?
2.
Explain how you determined your hypothesis regarding the ability of Silly Putty
®
to pick up water soluble inks. What scientific information did you incorporate to formulate the hypothesis? Was your hypothesis correct? 3.
Were the inks you used properly classified as soluble and insoluble? Explain your answer.
"like dissolves like" it can be determined that slime is polar just the water-
soluble inks are polar.
PICTURE (2 POINTS): © eScience Labs, 2018
1.
The slime did pick up the highlighter but that was the only water soluble ink. They are similar and the slime is polar just like the water soluble ink.
2.
The hypothesis was based on the assumption that like substances dissolve like substances. The hypothesis was partially correct, as it accurately predicted the interaction with newsprint ink but not with others.
3.
No because the pen was technically under soluble but was in fact not. The other two were classified correctly.

For scuba dives below 150 ft, helium is often used to replace nitrogen in the scuba tank. If 16.9 g of He(g) and 31.7 g of O2 (g) are added to a previously evacuated 4.35 L tank at 21°C, calculate the
partial pressure of each gas present as well as the total pressure in the tank.
