Physical Science Laboratory Template Name Elena Martens Unit # 5 Day and time this laboratory was done on 2/10/2024 at 4:30 p.m. Source of your idea for this laboratory Thermal Energy and Diffusion,”   Experiment 15, pages 81-84 of the MicroPhySci Second Edition Lab Manual. Student Fills in Information Student’s Comments Science Concept The purpose of this lab is to determine the relationship between thermal energy and diffusion. Materials Needed 150 mL beaker, food coloring, heat source, ice, pan, water Experimental Design By using water at three different temperatures, I will measure the amount of time it takes for food coloring to completely diffuse in the water. I will water at 100 degrees in a 150 mL beaker, then place food coloring timing how long it takes to turn the entire beaker a color. Repeating this same step two more times, at the temperatures of 37 degrees and 0 degrees. Timing the rate of diffusion at each temperature. Possible Outcomes The higher the temperature the quicker the diffusion will take place. The lower the temperature the longer it will take for complete diffusion. Prediction of which outcome will occur When the temperature is at 100 degrees, the diffusion rate will take less than 15 seconds due to the heat of the water. When the temperature of the water is 0 degrees, the diffusion rate will take longer than a minute due
to the cold temperature slowing down the process. Results Conclusion Based on my predictions as well as the times measured, this experiment displayed that the higher the temperature of water the quicker the diffusion rate. No comments for this experiment, it was very straightforward and easy to complete.
