HLTWHS006 Manage personal stressors in the work environment Task 1 Develop strategies to manage personal stress by: summarising stress sources and triggers in own job role summarising your usual stress responses researching strategies to prevent, reduce and manage stress identifying resources for additional support writing a personal stress management plan How will I summarise stress sources and triggers in my own job role? There are many stress sources and triggers that could challenge my stress levels at work. These are some that can arise : 1. Lack of knowledge to begin with – If adequate training is not provided 2. Environment – it could be too noisy or the temperature may be too hot or cold 3. Time management – Without a plan, workload can seem overwhelming 4. Client outcome - eg: may be homeless if I cannot find them a housing solution, death, client. 5. Heavy workload – Too many clients assigned 6. Not enough staff 7. Lack of Communication with Managers and colleagues 8. Lack of resources available 9. Unclear scope of practice 10. Unrealistic expectations from clients or funding bodies. How will I summarise my usual stress response? 1. Reactive stress - this is a result of not being able to cope with demands being made, this could be physical or emotional. 2. Cumulative stress - this is a result of of continual stressors 3. Critical incident stress - this is a reaction to demands that are unexpected or sudden. 4. Post-traumatic stress - which is a more long-term effect in relation to a traumatic stressor How will I research strategies to prevent, reduce and manage stress? 1. Examine Job Description - Check job description thoroughly, if it is unclear, ask manager for clarification. I have this in my new job, it is a new created job this year and guidelines seem very open for interpretation, we often get workload which is not what we do but because of government wording, it is very subjective. There are no clear rules and we are working them out as we go along but I always ask my managers advice.
2. Ensure you have the resources you need - yes, in an ideal world, we are continually discovering our resources as we are in a new role, if i do not have something, I ask my colleagues or other departments in our organisation and always share anything I discover to help others. 3. Time Management - I make a To-do list every day and prioritise what needs to be actioned first, this helps me immensely. 4. Set realistic Goals - Aligned with Time Management, I schedule my clients with a research gap or day in-between so I can realistically action the requests being made, this helps with workload 5. Organisation - I make sure my workspace is organised and I have relevant materials at hand for task completion. 6. Consult with colleagues and learn strategies to cope with situations outside my control, such as death of a client, a client becoming homeless, learn detachment methods and separating work and personal life reactors. 7. Clarify funding body expectations and ensure we are meeting our requirements and expectations correctly. 8. Suggest meetings with other staff and management where necessary. 9. Take adequate breaks 10. Plan effectively, ensuring that appropriate time is given to clients and also the research needed for each one. How will identify resources for additional support? Family, friends and colleagues can provide different viewpoints and suggestions for looking at tasks or offering problem solutions. It is also a great download option which helps in alleviating stressors. Colleagues can provide vital information needed for task completion and provide resources that may not have been available otherwise. Friends and family can provide emotional support and provide outlets by way of social pursuits that help manage stress and have outside interests that can change and balance mood levels. I can also access EAP counselling sessions to support in strategies to cope with situations beyond my control or engage with a doctor or psychologist.
How will I write a personal stress management plan? I could make a holistic plan which could include the following : 1. The person must first identify and address the problem, look for the triggers and solutions around this. 2. The person could obtain organisation provisions such as the Employee assitance program counselling 3. Avoid stressful situations and learn to let go 4. Go for a beach walk 5. Dance and socialise 6. Make time for some personal relaxation such as a spa or relaxing with music, reading or a podcast 7. Eat good food 8. Exercise 9. Take breaks 10. Meditation
