Interviewee: David Johnson (Network Administrator) &
1.
How did you come to work in this industry? Why are you interested in health care?
David: I have always loved computers and technology since I was a child. Sparked my interest to
work in health care when my grandmother was in a nursing home and saw how behind in the times with charting (paper charts). 2.
What skills and experience do you consider to be the most crucial for an IT manager in the healthcare industry?
David: Being knowledgeable and having the ability to work quickly to ensure floor staff can do their jobs on time.
3.
What was your training for this position? What are your training methods to ensure the effectiveness of a new hire? What are your training computer systems?
David: I received my bachelor's in network administration, where I learned a lot of key informa-
tion that I still use today to be successful. We do have a training manual and competencies per say to ensure new hires meet the criteria of the job. PointClickCare offers a training website where new hires can play around and figure out how the system works. 4.
How do you ensure your organization is keeping up with continual advances in medical technology and other technological trends?
David: We are always integrating new systems to ensure providers have everything they need to do their jobs efficiently, we get feedback from staff to see what they like, what they don't like, and what they need to be more efficient.
5.
What do you do when trying to solve a problem and you are confronted with contradic-
tory information?
David: Refer back to my training manual or consult with my boss to ensure I am following proper protocols.
6.
What EMR/EHR system does your company or organization use? Why this selection?
David: The Organization utilizes PointClickCare, it is fairly user-friendly and was cost-effective at the time of taking over 13 buildings within the Midwest.
7.
How do you implement significant improvements and changes to an IT infrastructure?
David: Issuing updates at night for better performance as during the night shift most places are not charting as much as typically day shift providers would. Keeping all users in the loop of scheduled maintenance and downtime.
8.
How do you ensure confidential data are stored in a secure place?
David: Ensuring individuals only have access to what they need for their jobs, as for data storage
only allowing specific users to certain information and access. Removing any users who are no longer with the organization immediately 9.
Do you work with a data warehouse information system or cloud applications? How do these systems affect data storage protocol?
David: We utilize cloud applications via SharePoint. Unlimited data storage, easily accessible, and low cost
10. What mistakes have you or your team made in dealing with medical staff? How have you
learned from those mistakes?
David: Not really a mistake but we tend to take over devices when trying to resolve issues in-
stead of talking with staff and allowing them to take the lead and gain knowledge. Somethings the staff cannot do but other things they can be walked through on how to do it, plus makes ev-
eryone nervous when we just jump on their computer and take over.
11. Do you consider communication an essential skill for IT management?
David: Communication is key and is an absolute must, we have to be able to walk providers through our systems if an issue should arise. And always remember not everyone is computer savvy.
12. Do you consider time management a vital skill?
David: Have to have the ability to fix issues timely, so the organization can be back to smooth operating order. Need to have the ability to prioritize what needs taken care of this second and then move on to smaller items. 13. Tell us which part of IT management you consider most rewarding.
David: Teaching someone who is not computer savvy a new trick to make their jobs easier. (I can
attest to this personally; David has shown me quite a few little tricks to make things simpler.) 14. What is one skill you need to improve on?
David: Sometimes I talk too much when assisting staff, and forget that they have other jobs to do, and I need to hurry up and get them back on track to do their jobs. 15. How do you monitor your team's technical performance?
David: Anytime there is an issue, the providers are issued a "ticket" number, track to see how long it takes issues to be resolved and follow-up made, as well as if the issue was truly resolved and in the appropriate manner.
