1 Quality Case Study Quality Case Study: Boeing 737 MAX Pull-Back Krista Comstock College of Business Administration (BBA) Program, Baker College MGT 4220-A1: Operations Management Dr. John Dorociak, Instructor June 4 th , 2024
2 Quality Case Study Introduction Boeing Co., an American aerospace company that manufacturers aircrafts for companies worldwide, has recently been highlighted in the news due to the many safety issues that have caught the media’s attention in recent months. Some critics have pushed for further investigation into the company’s manufacturing plants and system processes. In late January, a whistleblower reported that faulty manufacturing practices contributed to the door flying off of the Alaskan Airlines flight (Rose, 2024). Upon reoccurring safety incidents, the Boeing 737 MAX has been grounded. The Quality Issue There are a number of safety issues occurring with aircraft manufactured by Boeing. Several incidents have been reported leading to a major company in chaos. The Federal Aviation Administration is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the company’s safety practices in manufacturing following a mid-cabin door flying off of Alaskan Airlines Flight 1282 (FAA, 2024). So far, the FAA has reported that Boeing has a long history of failing to comply with industry quality standards. Currently, the Boeing 737 MAX is grounded, and production expansion has been halted due to multiple reported allegations. The Fishbone Chart of Boeing Below is a Fishbone Chart analyzing Boeing’s safety problems. Also called an Ishikawa or cause and effect diagram, these charts identify the causes and effects of an issue and is often worked into brainstorming sessions (American Society for Quality, 2024).
3 Quality Case Study Five Why Analysis The Five Why Analysis (also called 5Y) is an excellent tool to understand the underlying causes of an issue and get to the root of the issue. The process cuts out surrounding issues to understand how an issue can be solved (Mind Tools, 2022). Below is a 5 Why Diagram to understand the underlying causes of Boeing’s issues.

4 Quality Case Study Total Quality Process By using the Total Quality (TQ) process, many of the problems that Boeing is facing could have been prevented and may be able to prevent future quality issues. Also referred to as Total Quality Management, this process is focused on reducing or eliminating errors in a manufacturing setting. Additionally, the Total Quality process has many benefits, including streamlining the supply chain management process, improves various aspects of the customer experience, and ensures that employees are adequately trained (Barone, 2023). If Boeing’s management teams adopted a Total Quality process, many of these safety issues that have been so prevalent in the media may have been caught before a safety incident occurred on the aircraft. Conclusion Boeing is under investigation by many agencies reporting problems that have occurred within the walls that manufacturer the many aircraft. This department needs a thorough restructure as the CEO of Boeing has already stepped down and all attention is on this company to mend the safety issues at their core. Problem: Lapses in quality control practices at Boeing Why are important quality practices looked over in Boeing's manufacturing plants? What kind of conditions are employees working under? Why are employee conditions stressful and safety practices are shorted? Why are employees following inadequate directions? Why is top management letting quality and safety standards slip through the cracks? Counter- measure: Top management needs to focus on the quality of these highly important machines instead of the interests of shareholders.
