Report
Week 1 Osmosis Lab Report Name: Tynasha McCallum Date: 12/01/23 Purpose: To apply the scientific method to observe and report on the process of osmosis and to investigate the effect of osmosis in cells in different solutions. Directions: Please read the Osmosis Lab instructions fully before beginning your experiment. Also read the textbook passages related to osmosis before filling out the report. Use this report form to record your predictions, observations, analysis, and conclusions. Please leave the report prompts intact and simply type your responses under each prompt . Because this report form is standard, SafeAssign will flag it with a large overlap score- do not concern yourself with this issue for this report. Hypotheses Reflect on your readings related to osmosis and cell membranes. Consider the four solutions in which you will immerse gummy bears. Briefly explain what you think will happen to the different gummy bears under the different conditions. Record which type of solution you prepared for Cup #4 in the appropriate table cell. Be as specific and as detailed as possible.Use the understanding of osmosis that you have developed from reading the text. Solution Hypothesis Water Only If the gummy bear is placed in only water then it will swell up Salt Water If the gummy bear is placed in salt water then it will shrink Sugar Water If the gummy bear is placed in sugar water then it will grow bigger Vinegar If the gummy bear is placed in the vinegar then it will shrink No Water If the gummy bear isn’t placed in any water it’ll stay the same
Materials and Methods See Osmosis Lab Instructions document for materials and methods. A metric ruler will be necessary to measure the length, height, and width in mm. Results Use the tables below to record your observations of the gummy bears after Part 1 of the lab and after Part 2 of the lab. Part 1 Results a. Record the measurements of the length, height, and width of your gummy bears in Table 1.1 before you place each of them in an experimental solution. Estimate the volume by multiplying the length x height x width. Record below the change in the physical characteristics of the gummy bears and solutions after they were immersed in their respective experimental solutions for 12-24 hours. Be careful. The gummy bears are fragile and slippery. The gummy bear placed in water still has the shape of a bear but looks bigger the water is clear. The gummy bear placed in the salt water appears to be smaller the color of the gummy bear is faded and the salt particles all went around the rim of the bottom of the cup. The gummy bear in the sugar water grew the gummy bear is lighter in color, the solution is still clear . The gummy bear in the vinegar dissolved. b. Record below the measurements of the gummy bears after they were immersed in their respective experimental solutions for 12-24 hours. Be sure to note what kind of solution was prepared for Cup #4. Write at least two or more paragraphs analyzing your results. Include the following: •  Describe and explain your results. How do they relate to the phenomenon of osmosis? (You may need to conduct additional independent research and cite your source.) •  State whether you obtained the results you expected and explain why you did or did not get the expected results. •  Summarize the overall knowledge you gained from this lab. How do you think your results might apply to cells generally? My results were pretty much what I predicted. In both the regular water solution and sugar water the water moved through the gummy bear through osmosis due to there being more sugar molecules in the gummy bears than in the water. Which caused them to grow bigger. With the salt water the water moved out of the gelatin causing the gummy bear to shrink. With the vinegar
solution the gummy bear dissolved due to the water moving out of it and the acidic properties of vinegar. The results I predicted were pretty much self explanatory and expected. I did due a similar project in middle school so I sorta knew already. Overall I was reintroduced to the process of osmosis and it’s meaning. It pretty much refreshed my memories of the way it works dealing with different solutions. Equilibrium when the water stops moving creating a balance ñ. My results may apply to cells because where there is a higher concentration in molecules in a cell as well as in the solutions more water moved into the cells. When there’s a higher solution of molecules outside the cell as well as the solution water moves out of the cell. •  Propose an osmosis related question that would be interesting to research further. What would happen to cells without Osmosis? Resource: Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Laboratories. (n.d.). Gummy bear chemistry and osmosis .
