Question To calculate the pH of the solution, use the formula pH = -log(H O ) Where (H O ) is hydronium ions. Hydronium ions are the combination of a water molecule and a hydrogen ion, resulting in the formula, H O . Hydronium is the key to calculating whether a solution is acidic or basic. In this case, the concentration of hydronium is 7.1×10 ² M. Using a scientific calculator or a logarithm table and substituting this value into the formula, we get: pH = -log(7.1×10 ²)
where 10 ² = - 0.01 pH = -log x (7.1 x -0.01) = 1.14874165128 To evaluate this expression, we can use the logarithm property. A negative sign before the logarithm indicates that we must take the negative logarithm of the concentration. pH ≈ -(-1.15) ≈ 1.15 I got the same result in the pH box when using the arrow on My Solution Mode, when I adjusted the settings for H3O+ equal to 7.1×10 ². 3. Conclusion I In this virtual lab, we collected data in three different modes: macro mode, micro mode, and my solution mode. I observed the same liquids in each mode to thoroughly understand the topic. In macro mode, we recorded the solution, pH, and nature of the solution. In Micro mode we registered the solution, pH, H O , and OH-. In My solution mode, we recorded the pH value of 3, corresponding to H O and OH-. The reaction concept is directly related to the concentration of hydronium ions that characterize aqueous solutions. Water environments may be acidic, neutral, and alkaline. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with values below 7 being acidic, values above 7 being alkaline, and pH 7 being neutral. I noticed that in solutions with pH<7, the concentration of H O ions + is greater than the concentration of OH– ions [ H O ] [OH–], hence such solutions are acidic, while in solutions with pH>7 the concentration of ions is higher hydroxides [ H O ] [OH–] and are alkaline. So, in the range from 0 to 7 we talk about pH acidic, and from 7 to 14 basic ( Lower & Kahlon, n.d.).
