3/22/24, 11:48 AM Lesson Activity: Using the Scientific Method Lesson Activity Using the Scientific Method This activity will help you meet this educational goal: You will plan an investigation using the scientific method and answer the proposed guestions. Directions Read the instructions for this self-checked activity. Type in your response to each question, and check your answers. At the end of the activity, write a brief evaluation of your work. Activity Many farmers and gardeners compost their plant and animal waste. The living material naturally decays in compost bins, forming a dirt-like substance that's rich in nutrients. The next season, farmers use this substance as a natural fertilizer for their crops. A biology student has grown tomato plants for several years. Until now, he used an artificial fertilizer formulated for tomato plants. This fertilizer caused his plants to grow faster and taller than they grew in unfertilized soil. The student wants to know whether using natural compost will cause his tomato plants to grow faster and taller than his artificial fertilizer. Answer the following questions to plan an investigation using the steps of the scientific method and help the student find the answer to his question. Part A What are the student’s observations and inferences before he starts his investigation? https://f1.app.edmentum.com/courseware-delivery/ua/665704/45450088/aHROcHM6LY9IMMS5hcHAUZWRIZW50dWO0uY29tL2x0aS92Mi9sZWFybmV... 1/6
3/22/24, 11:48 AM Lesson Activity: Using the Scientific Method Answer: The student has noticed that plants have grown faster and taller by using artifical fertiziler compared to plain soil, and he knows that compost is a natrual fertilizer. So, his inference is that his plants can grow at a much faster rate if he uses compost, rather than using plain soil. Answer: Does compost cause tomotato plants to grow faster and taller than artificial fertilizer? 3/22/24, 11:48 AM Lesson Activity: Using the Scientific Method Part C Construct at least two possible hypotheses for the student’s experiment. Answer: Hypothesis A: The compost's natural nutrients will grow the tomotato plants at a faster rate than if artificial fertilizer is used. Hypothesis 2: The artificial fertilizer is made for tomotato plants, and thus, the tomato plants will grow faster than if they were given compost. Space used (includes formatting). 292 / 15000 Show Sample Answer PartD Choose one of the hypotheses to make a prediction. Answer: The tomato plants will grow faster and taller in the soil containing compost, over a 1 month period. 3/22/24, 11:48 AM Lesson Activity: Using the Scientific Method Show Sample Answer Part E How would you conduct your investigation? In your answer, explain your independent and dependent variables. Answer: The growth rate of the plant is the dependent variable because the type of fertilizer used will determine how much or how little and how quickly it will grow, whereas the type of fertilizer(or not using any fertilizer) is the independent variable. If | were to conduct this experiment/investigation, | would have 1 pot of tomato plants that wouldn't contain any fertilizer, 1 pot of tomato plants that will be planted in soil that contains articial fertilizer, and 1 pot of tomato plants that will be plant in soil containing compost. Every day week, | will measure the plants height, for a total of 4 weeks, and see which pot grew most. Space used (includes formatting): 651 / 15000 Show Sample Answer Part F How does the design of your experiment control for outside factors that may affect the results? https://f1.app.edmentum.com/courseware-delivery/ua/665704/45450088/aHROcHM6LY9IMMS5hcHAUZWRIZW50dWO0uY29tL2x0aS92Mi9sZWFybmV... 4/6
3/22/24, 11:48 AM Lesson Activity: Using the Scientific Method Answer: My control variables will be the time each pot is planted(all pots are planted at the same time) and both pots will receive an equal amount of water and light. | will repeat this 4 week experiment 3 times(so basicallt 3 trials each being a 4-week period) to make my results even more accurate, Space used (includes formatting): 300 / 15000 Show Sample Answer Part G How do you plan to analyze and communicate your results? Answer: First of all | will create a data table for each pot of tomato plants, writing down their initial height, and the heights at the end of Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then, | will make a line graph with each of the 3 lines next to each other to show the comparison and how much change was in each pot. Then | will calculate the average change in height for each of 3 pots of plants. Space used (includes formatting): 380/ 15000 Show Sample Answer https://f1.app.edmentum.com/courseware-delivery/ua/665704/45450088/aHROcHM6LY9IMMS5hcHAUZWRIZW50dWO0uY29tL2x0aS92Mi9sZWFybmV... 5/6
3/22/24, 11:48 AM Lesson Activity: Using the Scientific Method Self-Evaluation How did you do? Rate your work on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the highest score. Then write a brief evaluation of your work below. Note what you learned and what challenged you. Answer: | think | got a 5 for doing my best.
