3/22/24, 3:20 PM Lesson Activity: Archaea and the History of Life on Earth Lesson Activity Archaea and the History of Life on Earth This activity will help you meet these educational goals: « You will communicate scientific ideas about the phenomena of a process or system using multiple formats, including text. « You will apply scientific reasoning to determine if available data and evidence support a given claim. « You will write routinely over short or long periods of time on a variety of topics and for a range of audiences. Directions Read the instructions for this self-checked activity. Type in your response to each question, and check your answers. At the end of the activity, write a brief evaluation of your work. Activity All life is made of cells, but all cells also have a shared history. Watch the video “Archaea and How DNA Began,” and answer the questions that follow. Part A Using evidence from the video, describe three characteristics of life that Archaea bacteria have. Answer: The video's image of the Archaea bacteria demonstrated that the organism was composed of a single cell with a clearly defined boundary. Because there is proof that Archaea's genes are still present in our DNA, scientists are also aware that it reproduces by passing on its genetic information. 3/22/24, 3:20 PM Lesson Activity: Archaea and the History of Life on Earth Show Sample Answer Part B What similarities and differences do you see between the bacteria and the human cells shown in the video? Are these cells prokaryotes or eukaryotes? Answer: There was a distinct border between both cells. The human cells were round, whereas the bacterial cells were rod-shaped. The nucleus and other internal structures of human cells were well defined. The center of the bacteria was darkened, but the nucleus was not well defined. Furthermore, humans have many cells, whereas bacteria only have one. Human cells are eukaryotes, whereas bacteria are prokaryotes. 3/22/24, 3:20 PM Lesson Activity: Archaea and the History of Life on Earth Answer: They inhabit incredibly hot climates. Therefore, they would require a system to regulate their body temperature internally. Answer: Yes, | think that the gene EEF1 ALPHA1 supports cell theory. According to the cell theory, cells are the building blocks of all living things. It is reasonable to conclude that all living things descended from the earliest forms of life since they all share a gene that originates from an organism that existed billions of years ago. This finding would clarify why cells make up every living thing on Earth.
