Module 11 Lab Report Classical Genetics Student Name: Part 1: Complete and Incomplete dominance What type of allele dominance is expressed in each of the Punnet Squares shown. Complete dominance, Incomplete dominance, Codominance. Complete dominance Incomplete dominance Codominance Codominance Incomplete dominance Incomplete dominance Part 2: Independent Assortment
What type of punnet square best represents the law of independent assortment? A dihybrid punnet square best represents independent assortment. Assume the following: The webpage linked here ( Human Mendelian Traits ) has a list and examples of 6 different human traits that are believed to be inherited in true Mendelian pattern dominant/recessive. Select 2 of the traits listed that either you, a sibling or your parents have. (If you do not want to do this in your own family, select a friends family, or a pair of celebrities with children that you can look at pictures of). You will be completing a dihybrid Punnet square using the traits you select. We will have to make a few assumptions since we don’t know the true parental genotype, but we may be able to figure that out! Assumptions: § If the parent expresses the trait, they are homozygous dominant § If the child/children express the trait but the parents do not, the parents are heterozygous. Traits selected: height and hair straight or curly Write the Letters you will be using in the Punnet square for each trait: T tall t small and S straight s curly Father Genotype: TTss possible gametes: Ts Mother Genotype:ttSS possible gametes: tS Parent Gametes TS Ts tS ts TS TTSS TTSs TtSS TtSs Ts TTSs TTss TtSs Ttss tS TTtSS TtSs ttSS ttSs ts TtSs Ttss ttSs ttss Do you have the phenotype of either of the traits in the cross? If you do, which one? I do I am short with curly hair. Are there any other offspring with either trait? Yes Which trait? One is tall with straight hair. Which phenotypic probability did you fall into? 6.25% Which phenotypic probability did other offspring fall into? 56.25%
Are you able to confidently state that one or both of the parents selected for this punnet Ex square are heterozygous or homozygous for the traits selected? Explain your answer . Both parents are heterozygous for the traits selected since they both had gamemets TtSs. Part 3: Genetics and Ethics Read the following webpage about Preimplantation Genetic Testing Answer the following questions in the text box below. Your essay should be no less than half a page. What is preimplantation genetic testing? Give an example of a condition screened for. Do you agree with preimplantation screening and what are some of the ethical concerns surrounding the practice? (carry out additional research if needed, be sure to include your resources in MLA format). Preimplantation genetic testing is a test that can be performed on embryos that are created through Vitro fertilization. It allows doctors to genetically analyze the embryos before the transfer process. PGT is used to find genetic defects in embryos such as Down syndrome and single gene disorders such as sickle cells and anemia. It can also detect the arrangement of genes with can cause pregnancy loss and birth defects. Additionally, there are concerns about the emotional and psychological impact on parents who may be faced with the difficult decision of discarding embryos that are found to have genetic abnormalities or disorders. Another ethical concern is the potential for genetic discrimination. In the future, individuals who were born from PGT may face discrimination in areas such as employment or insurance due to their known genetic information. This raises questions about privacy and the potential for stigmatization. As for my opinion on preimplantation genetic testing, I believe it can be a valuable tool when used for medical purposes to prevent the birth of children with severe genetic diseases. It provides couples at risk of transmitting genetic conditions to their offspring with the opportunity to have healthy children. PGT can also be beneficial for couples who have experienced recurrent miscarriages or fertility issues by increasing the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.
