BIOL-4400 Research Project Proposal Form 1. What is your proposed research question? While taking my daily walks, I have observed a noticeable increase in bird activity during the morning hours as opposed to later in the day. This observation prompts the question of whether birds exhibit higher feeding activity in the morning hours compared to the afternoon hours. 2. In order to design an experiment, you must have a hypothesis to test, so what is your hypothesis? Remember that your hypothesis must be testable. It needs to be written as specifically as possible. Include your variables/testing conditions and what you predict will happen. I hypothesize that there will be a higher abundance of birds feeding during the early morning hours, specifically between 9 am and 10 am, compared to the afternoon period from 1pm to 2 pm. 3. Please provide a brief description of the project you would like to work on for class. Please note that you CANNOT work with human subjects, including yourself, and you cannot manipulate, influence or harm animals . I plan to conduct my project focusing on bird observations at the Santa Anna Wildlife Refuge, where the presence of food attracts various bird species seeking nourishment and other resources. The objective is to determine whether there is a higher bird population during the morning hours or if the afternoon exhibits a greater presence of birds. . 4. Please provide some details about your methodology. You may use bullets or paragraphs. You should repeat your observations or measurements at least three times so you can conduct statistical testing later. Santa Anna Wildlife Refuge operates daily from 8 am to 4 pm, accessible to the public. The methodology I plan to use is to arrive at Santa Anna Wildlife Refugee from 8:30 am and again at 12:45 pm over the course of 5 days. With my notes app or a small journal, I will keep track of the birds I see are feeding between the hours mentioned. 5. List what you will be measuring, counting, etc. Make sure you include units and how many trials you will be conducting. (A minimum of five is needed for sufficient statistical analysis) Number of birds feeding The 60-minute period of observing birds over the course of 5 days. 6. Sketch an example of how you intend to analyze your data. (i.e. draw a bar graph and label the axis add placeholder data that represents support of your hypothesis) Average Number of Birds Seen Feeding Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Key 9am-10am 1pm-2pm
7. Estimate your project’s data collection timeline. The project does not have to take weeks to complete if you plan it well. My period of observation will be conducted on the days of February 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 However if there are factors such as inclement weather, I will move my observation period to the next best day. My data can be expected to be complete sometime between late February and Early March. The data graphs and figures can be expected shortly after obtaining my data and reviewing it. 8. Please provide some explanation as to why this project is beneficial to you, your community, the scientific community, or even globally. Is your explanation strong enough for an agency to grant you funding? Birds contribute significantly to various ecological processes. Understanding the feeding times of birds can greatly expand our knowledge of their ecological behaviors. It helps us understand their daily rhythms and habits, which can contribute to our goal in conserving and protecting endangered bird species. Beyond their ecological importance, observing current bird feeding times can help us understand the interplay of climate change and human development in influencing their migration patterns.
