Name: Husanpreet Kaur Scientific Writing Assignment #3: Searching for Sources *This assignment was adapted from: Adapted from a Information Literacy Grant written by Brown, C., Sinex, L., and Laherty, J., PSY 102 Introduction to Psychology 2, Online. Instructions: Read through the entire document and answer all questions. It would also help with grading if you put your typed answers in a different (but readable) color font . Save and upload your completed assignment to the associated assignment page on Canvas. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that the correct file was submitted to Canvas by the due date. Quick reminder: Make sure that all answers are in your own words. Do not copy and paste directly from any articles, as this is considered plagiarism. Getting Started In this assignment, you will carry out a literature search and create a research log related to your lab section project question. Specifically, you will develop potential search terms that are related to your research question. Then you will begin searching, recording your process on a research log, analyze the results you have found, and begin modifying your search accordingly. Before you begin the assignment, read through the pages linked on the assignment page, which will guide you through the iterative process of searching for sources online. After reading the resources linked on the assignment page, work through the following questions: 1. (1pt) Record your lab section project question and underline the major concepts. What is the effect of tanning lotion of a certain SPF on the survivability of yeast in comparison to a sunscreen of the same SPF ? 2. (8pts) A research log is a document that helps you keep track of and think about how you search for sources. Even for advanced researchers, it is good practice to keep track of your searches, what worked for you, and what didn't. Use the following table as your research log and begin searching on your research topic/question. Fill in the information on the chart for each search. You must use at least two different search tools/databases, and try at least two different searches for each. Complete a minimum of 8 total searches. To help you get started, consider using some of the major concepts you underlined in question 1 as your keywords 1
Date Tool or Source Used ( GoogleScholar, Web of Science , PubMed , IUCAT, EBSCO, etc.) Keywords or phrases # of search results Reflection Describe your search results. What worked or didn’t work for your search? Do you think the results of this search provide potential sources for your upcoming paper on Yeast and UV? 2/13/23 Google Scholar Tanning Lotion, Yeast Cells, 18,500 For this search I used Google Scholar as the search engine, and I typed up “effects of tanning lotion on yeast cells” into the search bar. I got results separate results for yeast and tanning lotion but no results of them together. 2/13/23 JSTOR Sunscreen, Yeast Cells 89 For this search I used JSTOR as the search engine, and I typed up sunscreen and yeast cells into the search bar. From this search I found one article that was interesting and incorporated both yeast cells and sunscreen. The article link is https://doi.org/10.2307/4449576 . This would be a helpful source in understanding the effects of sun protectants on yeast. 2/13/23 PubMed Sunscreen, Yeast Cells 74 For this search I used PubMed as the search engine, and I typed up “effects of sunscreen on yeast cells” into the search bar. I got results separate results for yeast and tanning lotion but no results of them together. There were however some interesting results on the effects of UV radiation on skin cells which could be used to better understand the effects of UV light on yeast cells. 2/13/23 Google Scholar Sunscreen, Yeast Cells 16,100 For this search I used Google Scholar as the search engine, and I typed up “sunscreen and yeast cells” into the search bar. I got some interesting results that talked about how hydrogel sunscreens and their effects on yeast: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S09277765 21003295 2/13/23 EBSCO Tanning Lotion, Sunscreen 4,835 For this search I used EBSCO as the search engine, and I typed up “sunscreen vs tanning lotions” into the search bar. I got some interesting results that compared the usage and effects of sunscreens and tanning lotions. This source would be beneficial in providing background information on the paper and help in better understanding the concepts and applications of UV protectants. 2
2/13/23 Google Scholar Yeast Cells, UV Lights 755,000 For this search I used Google Scholar as the search engine, and I typed up “Yeast Cells and UV Lights” into the search bar. I found many article that talked about the effects of UV lights on the yeast cells and their compositions. This will clarify how cells are affected by UV lights and what are some ways to protect them from these harmful rays. 2/13/23 Google Scholar UV lights, Sunscreen 20,900 For this search I used Google Scholar as the search engine, and I typed up “sunscreen and UV lights” into the search bar. I got some interesting results that talked about the relevance of UV protectants and sunscreen. Articles such as this clarify why UV lights are harmful and what type of preventative measures there are. 2/13/23 PubMed UV lights, Tanning Lotions 8 For this search I PubMed Scholar as the search engine, and I typed up “tanning lotions and UV lights” into the search bar. The results I got help in understanding how tanning lotions were created and what their applications are. This will better understand the reasoning behind why they are used. 3

3. (6pts) Pick two sources from your search that could better inform your lab section project research question. Remember, some of these sources may be good references for your Introduction and Discussion sections that you will write in future weeks. A quick note on citations: Scientific journals differ in their preferred citation styles. For this class, pick your preferred citation style and consistently use that same style within any given assignment/paper. Check out the following link on commonly used citation styles in science: https://www.bibguru.com/blog/citation-styles-for- science/ Source 1: Citation [APA, Chicago, Council of Science Editors, etc]: Lois T. Mayo, and Pat J. Friedrichsen. “Using Yeast & Ultraviolet Radiation to Introduce the Scientific Method.” The American Biology Teacher 55, no. 1 (1993): 42–43. https://doi.org/10.2307/4449576. How did you find this source (search tool, keywords, etc)? I used JSTOR and typed yeast cells and sunscreen into the search bar. Summarize the content of the source. You don’t necessarily have to read the whole source, but explain the clues or how you determined what the source is about. In this source the authors conducted an experiment in which Saccharomyces Cerevisiae (yeast cells) are introduced to UV lights in order to understand how harsh exposure of sunlight (UV lights) on skin cells effects its growth and health. Evaluate the source. How does this source inform your research topic? How might you use this source within your full laboratory write-up? This source is helpful as it can be used to understand how different durations of, and different exposures of sunlight can affect yeast cells. It will better help in understanding the objects of the experiment. Source 2: Boller D, M Stella, A Rivolin, P Cassano, D Risso, and M Vanzetti. “Fig Leaf Tanning Lotion and Sun-Related Burns: Case Reports.” Burns: journal of the International Society for Burn Injuries, November 27, 2001. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11600261/. 4

You don’t necessarily have to read the whole source, but explain the clues or how you determined what the source is about. In this article the authors talk about the relationship between tanning lotions and sun burns. They talk about characteristics of these burns and their affects in the skin. Evaluate the source. How does this source inform your research topic? How might you use this source within your full laboratory write-up? This source will be helpful in understanding how and why tanning lotions were created. It will give important background information that will help in understanding the concepts and objectives of this experiment. It will be all be good to know this information in order to understand how and why these methods are being performed. 5
