BIOL 2260L EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES (10 points possible) DUE: April 26 th on D2L at 11:59 pm, EST. OPTION ONE Short essays – instructions below These are not mandatory. These are only for those who wish to receive extra credit. Short essay criteria: word count 100-150 words, thoughtful, correct grammar and spelling, complete sentences. Additionally, include name, section number, and choice in the header. These are not meant to be exhaustive, difficult, nor time-consuming. Do not take more than 15-20 minutes to complete each one. If you do, then you are putting too much effort into it. No citations are needed. All three need to be answered for full credit. 1. What aspect(s) of this laboratory course can/will you take over into your nursing career ? Ideas can be broad such as aseptic technique, and antibiotic sensitivity or narrower for techniques such as swabbing for sample collection. 2. Identify a microbe that you may encounter in your career (or one you just think is interesting), and various characteristics about it. These may include if it will stain pink or purple in a Gram stain, which types of agar it may grow on (TSA, BEA, EMB, MSA), and if those agar will change color, antibiotic sensitivity (if any at all), and any other interesting facts about it. You can use organisms that are in your lab exercises or others we have not mentioned. Good resources: microbiologyinfo.com, asm.org, testing.com 3. Write an overview about a lab unit of your choice, compete with key takeaways . Include facts about the lab unit, and the reason it was done.
OPTION TWO Interview With a Nurse Your Name: Your section and group: Name of Nurse Interviewed: Current Specialty: Each set of questions must be answered with approximately 50 to 100 words you may need more than one page. 1.) “Where have you worked as a nurse? What was the main way aseptic technique was used in each of those environments? (For the student highlight specific differences across work environments for example special precautions taken in labor delivery versus the Emergency room etc. or how instruments are sterilized differently. You may make reference to each of these environments throughout this assignment) 2.) “Have you had any experience with infections, specifically with antibiotic resistant pathogens or hospital acquired infections in your work? What are some ways of preventing hospital acquired infections? What happens if one type of antibiotic does not work?” 3.) Student question: List different types of patients that are considered immune compromised and discuss what kind of pathogens infect the immune compromised. 4.) Interview question: “Do you have any experience with patients with compromised immune systems? Tell me about any specific precautions or procedures you needed to take with those patients.” For the student: alternatively, if this nurse does not have experience. Then do some research on chemotherapy patients and additional precautions that need to be taken around them. Such as *special hand washing/sanitizing procedures and any special rules for what is allowed in these patient’s rooms. 5.) Ask your own interview question: You may ask them any question you are dying to know and record their response here. It can be about microbiology or a specific aspect of their specialty or their schooling.
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF AN INTERVIEW: Interviewee: Linh Pham 1.) Where have you worked as a nurse? Northside GI Lab department currently, but I have worked at a traditional hospital on med surg. I worked there for a few years before moving into where I work now. The lab I work in is much more lax compared to the usual med surg floor. 2.) How do you use aseptic techniques in your daily work or previous work experience? Some things that come to mind are preparing foley catheters for elderly people. You have to wash your hands thoroughly and use sterile gloves. For some patients there’s a sterile area or covering that is maintained to ensure no contamination occurs and only sterile tools/gloves are allowed in this area. 3.) Have you had any experience with antibiotic resistant pathogens or hospital acquired infections in your work? /How did you deal with that situation? MRSA is one that comes to mind, it is an infection that I often saw. Everytime I would enter a patient’s room who had MRSA I would have to prepare gloves and a gown to ensure that I don’t catch the infection from the patient, and also so that I don’t spread MRSA to others in the hospital. Normal clothes wouldn’t be enough to prevent MRSA from spreading normally that's why lots of disposable equipment is used frequently. 4.) Do you have any experience with patients with compromised immune systems? Tell us about any specific precautions or procedures you needed to take with those patients. Definitely, usually immunocompromised people have a sort of notification on their door to make sure whoever enters the room is aware. You’ll see this with cancer patients who went through chemo as they become immunocompromised after that. So certain things can’t be in the room with them, such as fresh flowers. Essentially anything with germs needs to be considered from flowers to even other people as they can carry germs that can harm the patient. 5. What made you decide to pursue nursing? Did you pursue nursing as your first degree or was it a field you decided to go back to school for?

Nursing was a field I went back to school for. I at first had a degree in a field of biology that would allow me to either get into microbiology or pursue a master’s in biology. I decided to go back to nursing as I wanted to help people and enjoyed interacting with others. It also has diverse areas for jobs so I could work anywhere other than just a traditional hospital if I wanted to.
