BIO 101 Lab 2 Assessment Fall 2021
BIO 101 - Lab 2 Assessment: The Scientific Method
Answer the following questions.
Your task is to design an experiment
to test the effect of pesticides on the Virginia big-eared bat foraging efficiency. You will not
be conducting this research in real life, but it is important to consider all the aspects of a research experiment. You have a nearly unlimited budget and a team of dedicated technicians to assist you. Describe the experiment by responding to the questions below in complete sentences
. 1.
What is a scientific hypothesis
? [5 Points]
A hypothesis is a proposed explanation or an educated guess for a particular phenomenon. It is a tentative statement that can be tested further through observation, experimentation, or research to
determine its validity. A good hypothesis is based on prior knowledge and is both testable and falsifiable.
2. What is the most important feature of a scientific hypothesis? [5 Points]
The most important feature of a scientific hypothesis is that it must be testable. 3. What is the difference, if any, between a theory and a hypothesis? [5 Points]
A theory is a well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations. A hypothesis is a
guess or estimate of what will happen. 1
BIO 101 Lab 2 Assessment Fall 2021
4. Why is it important to replicate
an experiment? [5 Points] Replicating an experiment validates scientific findings.
5. What is the hypothesis
of your proposed experiment? Remember to write it as a statement, not as a question. [10 Points]
The use of pesticides is affecting the foraging efficiency of big-eared bats in Virginia.
6. Describe the control group
in your experiment, including the number of experimental subjects. (Keep in mind your answer to question 4.) [12 Points]
The variable that is not being tested is the control group in this experiment, which does not include the big-eared bats.
2
BIO 101 Lab 2 Assessment Fall 2021
7. Describe the experimental group
in your experiment, including the number of subjects. (Again, keep in mind your answer to question 4.) How will the experimental group be treated differently from the control group? [12 Points]
In this experiment, I aim to investigate the impact of major pesticides on big-eared bats. The experimental group will consist of these bats, known for their crucial role in pollination and insect control. The study will help us understand how these pesticides affect the bats' behavior, feeding patterns, and overall health. By analyzing the results, we hope to gain insights into how we can better protect bat populations and the ecosystems they inhabit.
8. What is the independent variable
(IV) in this experiment? (i.e., what are you testing the effect of…what is being controlled/changed?) [12 Points]
The pesticides. 9. List one or more relevant dependent (response) variable(s)
(DV). Be specific, including an indication of how you will measure
each DV. (i.e., what are you measuring/recording for your hypothesis) [12 Points]

Assessment 2: scenario based assessment
Instructions
This is a ‘scenario problem’. Read the information and answer the questions. Your answers must be concise, focus on the question (an introduction isn’t needed), and include a short explanation. ANSWERS OF ESSAY LENGTH ARE NOT REQUIRED. You will need to include some explanation as part of your answers. References should be included both in text (Harvard referencing system) and as a reference list at the end..
Please note that these questions are not equally weighted, and it is likely that answers to some will be a bit longer than others. Because of this, your mark will be based on your overall response to all of the questions. This doesn’t mean you can ignore a question – you must attempt all questions.
Consider the following scenario:
A group of five treasure hunters have been hired to retrieve some artefacts believed to be in an abandoned castle in an environment similar to the Arctic tundra (this is a quasi-fantasy land where…

List the energy yield in ATP molecules for each of the following
reactions. If the reaction needs ATP give the answer as a negative
number.
✓ Correct
This reaction has two steps. In the first step, ATP is generated as glucose is broken down into two molecules of pyruvate. Under anaerobic conditions
pyruvate is converted to lactate. In this second step, ATP, in the form of NADH+H+, is used to power the conversion of pyruvate to lactate. Energy-
producing steps can be summarized as follows
glucose → 2 pyruvate + 2 ATP + 2 NADH (5 ATP)
ATP produced = 2 ATP +2 NADH(1 NADH…
