1 Module 7 Project Southern New Hampshire University HUM-100: Perspectives in the Humanities Sharon Worley October 16, 2022
2 Module 7 Project The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a prominent memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. It's a white marble sarcophagus on a hill overlooking Washington, D.C., Since 1921. It has been the resting place for America's service members who were never identified. In 1958 and 1984, it was expanded to include those from other conflicts. It has been used as a place of reflection and mourning for those who served the country. Although I have not been to the tomb yet, I plan to visit it in Virginia. One of the most striking characteristics of the tomb is that it makes you think of all the fallen heroes. The memorial's goal was to honor all the service members who were never identified. It was constructed to provide a place of reflection and mourning for those who served the country. Having visited the tomb every year, I believe it was a successful project. When I first visited the tomb, one of the most critical questions I asked was why it was designed to look like it had a marble sarcophagus. After doing some research, I learned that the tomb was initially made out of a simple marble slab. Thousands of people visited the cemetery during its early years to pay their respects to the unknown soldier. The casket features three rows of stacked wreaths. On the front panel, three figures represent the three elements of peace, victory, and courage. On the back is an inscription that says that the tomb is resting in honor of an American soldier. Values that my family and friends have taught me have changed over time. As a result, I have been able to shape my beliefs and values instead of my family's. When I was younger, I had a hard time accepting that it was
3 acceptable for me to have my own opinions and beliefs. Although my family and friends believed in one thing, it didn't mean I had to follow their example. If someone plans to research the tomb, I recommend visiting the memorial. There are a lot of resources that can be found online, but not everyone can access them. Doing so will allow the researcher to get the necessary information. The internet is full of information and is constantly growing, so there will likely be enough for the researcher to choose from. In addition to answering the questions that I asked, the information I gathered would also help me better understand the tomb's design. As humans, we can express ourselves through various forms of art. One of the most common forms of art that people use is writing. When I think of cultural events that are related to the tomb, one of the most prominent examples that come to mind is the USS Maine Mast Memorial. It is a memorial constructed to commemorate the 266 individuals who lost their lives while serving aboard the USS Maine. The memorial was constructed using a mast that was recovered from the ship. It was a temporary resting place for foreign heads of state killed in the U.S. during the Second World War. These included the Philippines' Manuel Quezon and Poland's Ignacy Jan Paderewski.
