Module 2 Project Proposal
Every culture has its way of memorializing the individuals who died in battle. Various memorials are commonly used to honor those who served, from statues and fountains to tombs and monuments. This proposal will look at the US Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Japanese shrine, the Ryozen Kannon.
The Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was established in 1921 to honor the soldiers who were never seen or heard from again. It's guarded by members of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, also known as the Old Guard. These soldiers undergo a rigorous training program to become certified as guards. They are held to a high standard of professionalism and appearance. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a very solemn and significant place to remember the sacrifices made by soldiers. However, it is also unequaled in its
representation of the honor and respect these individuals receive in the US.
In 1955, a Japanese shrine named the Ryozen Kannon was built in Kyoto. It features a Buddhist statue and a shrine dedicated to the Buddhist goddess of Mercy. This peaceful and tranquil shrine is located under a Buddhist statue. The shrine features a memorial that contains over two million memorial tablets that were made for Japanese soldiers who died during the Second World War. It also features a chapel designed to honor the Allied soldiers who died under
the Japanese occupation.
The two memorial structures show how the US and Japan honor their dead differently. The American monument is placed under armed guard at Arlington National Cemetery. At the same time, the Japanese shrine is located in a military cemetery. The Japanese shrine is focused on peace and is located in a military cemetery. This cultural contrast shows the religious

differences between the US and Japan. After the war, Japan's militaristic culture significantly changed, and foreign conflicts were viewed more negatively than before the country's surrender.
In response to the war, Japan's new constitution prohibited the country's soldiers from participating in military activities. Through the perspective of different people, one can gain a deeper understanding of the events that happened during the war.
