ECCS 102, Planning Sheet
Names: Shauna Schoenberger, Maria Urra and Claire Ramos
Art Media & Material Topic: Adhesives
Experience: #1
Describe in detail your idea for your art engagement with materials.
For this experience, children will have an opportunity to practice developing their fine motor
skills. Children will be encouraged to explore the art of stretching elastic bands to be able to fit
them around the nails that have been securely hammered into a wooden board. This
open-ended experience will encourage children to use their imagination and foster their
creativity while also developing hand-eye coordination and muscle strength.
What materials do you need? Be specific.
●
Nails (20-30)
●
Hammer
●
A large wooden board
●
Multi-coloured Elastic bands (20-30)
●
Paint
What space will you use (table, under a table, on the floor, in the water table, etc.)?
Consider aesthetics in your description.
The setup is designed to provide an interactive experience that stimulates children to want to
explore. The experience will be placed on a table; the wooden board will be placed in the
middle, creating a focal point for children to understand the activity. Spread out throughout the
table will be elastic bands placed in a pile sorted by colour; this will allow children to pick the
colour they want without being overwhelmed, allowing them to explore how to stretch and
manipulate the elastic bands. The table will be in an open space to allow children to move freely
around the time and explore and connect the elastics.
What element of art will your group be focusing on? How will you encourage this?
This experience is an excellent way for children to explore and focus on the elements of art
known as shapes. By stretching the elastic bands around the nails, children can create various
shapes, such as triangles, squares, rectangles, and even circles. This activity can allow children
to learn about sides and even angles. To encourage children to practice with different shapes
and sizes, we will encourage problem-solving by placing nails deeper and placing many nails;
children can attempt and experiment with more complex shapes, such as hexagons.
Other considerations (e.g. time, special considerations, safety concerns, specific tools,
etc.)
●
giving children enough time and support to explore the elastics and not rushing children
to avoid that stress factor
●
Ask open-ended questions such as "Can you tell me about it?" or "What does the
elastics feel like when pulled?"
●
Supervising children, making sure they do not pull out any of the nails.
●
Choking hazards: supervising children, making sure they do not place the elastics in
their mouth, ensuring they do not choke
What do you hope the children will do? What are you wanting to accomplish? Relate this
back to your learning and coursework.
In this experience, I hope the children will overcome their challenges by seeking out their
curiosity. They can use those crucial thinking skills and creativity to engage and explore their
new knowledge. Additionally, throughout the experience, I hope children will ask questions, seek
answers, and develop hand-eye coordination. To accomplish this, I will ask open-ended
questions to further creativity. In this experience, I hope my ideas of how this experience I
planned in my head goes right, and if it doesn't, I hope children surprise me with new ideas and
thoughts but still have our experience successful.
Consider an open-ended question, or another material that you would offer to extend
their exploration.
●
"Can you tell me about it?"
●
"What does the elastics feel like when pulled?"
●
"How can we find out?" (if a child is struggling with the elastics)
●
"tell me about the choice of colour elastics you picked?"
