[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 2
The creator I have chosen for this assignment is the great musician Michael Jackson.
He
is still considered the ultimate pop icon even with his passing in 2009.
He was a singer,
dancer,
and one of the greatest showmen to ever live.
His music is still some of the best selling music of
all time.
He was born in Gary, Indiana on August 29, 1958, to Joe and Katherine Jackson.
He
was the eighth child of the family and made his debut in 1964 as part of the Jackson 5. Being
known as the “King of Pop” Michael became known for his music, dance, and fashion.
He
popularized various dance moves such as the moonwalk and the robot.
His influence spread to
many artists across multiple genres.
He became a solo artist in 1971 with Motown Records
which he then became a star with his 1979 album
Off the Wall
.
The cultural work I will talk about here is his album
Thriller.
This album became his first
number one album the the U.S.
Billboard
Top LPs & Tapes chart.
It spent a record 37
consecutive weeks at number one.
It is filled with classic songs like “The Girl is Mine”, “Beat
It”, “Billie Jean”, and of course “Thriller” which were all hits on their own.
This was merely the
beginning for a transcendent artist that would be able to break cultural barriers and reach people
of all cultures with his music.
Several of the songs on this album made it to the U.S.
Billboard
Hot 100 chart which also set the record for most top 10 singles from an album.
32 million copies
of this album sold worldwide which is why it became the best selling album of all time.
Questions about human culture come to mind when thinking about this artist and his
works.
What was life like for the artist during his time?
Looking at its history, what were the
circumstances that led to the creation of these works?
What influences were drawn upon in order
to create this particular sound with these particular messages?
There are also a few big questions that come to mind about this artist and his works.
What motivated him to get up and create his work?
What gave him his drive to do what he did?
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 3
Did he ever intend to become as big as he did?
Did he love doing what he did? Finally, did he
ever
think that he would have a global reach and that he would break down cultural barriers by
doing this?
