Running head: [SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 1 HUM 100 7-1 Project Desmond Mallery Southern New Hampshire University
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 2 The cultural work of human creative expression that I am analyzing is the movie “The Color Purple” starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery, and a whole host of other stars that really brought life to this particular project. It was directed by Steven Spielberg. I had first seen this work when I was younger at home. What really stood out to me was the time period depicted as well as the fact that the cast was mostly African American. It really left an impression on me even though I could not understand most of what was going on in the movie. I just knew that African Americans were shown to have had a hard time, especially the women. The movie was meant to highlight the injustices suffered by African Americans, mainly the women in the early 1900s. It shows how African American women had to fight for their independence. I think the creator wanted to capture the essence of the book and bring it to life. I think the overall message was that we should respect African American women for what they have had to endure over the times. It seemed like that was the overall sentiment that was meant to be pulled from the experiences of each of the characters. I think they were very successful at opening the eyes of those who watch the movie. I think the message got its mark as things seemed to have gotten progressively better for African American women over time. This film is a piece of history that really is a plea to treat everyone better regardless of where they come from. The movie may highlight the issues African American women faced, but there are plenty of cultures and people, especially women of those cultures who suffered through their own set of circumstances that could be seen as injustice as well. This movie opens up a conversation that is quite profound that says that we need to treat one another better because you do not know what their circumstances are and why they do the things that they do. You can

This movie was the first to actually make me question various things about life in general. The first thought I had was what drove the creator of this work to make it in the first place? How did they decide which medium to use in order to convey their message? Did they think their work would really make an impact and give a voice to those who had went unheard before? Were the issues so bad that they needed to be highlighted in such a way? It was really eye opening for me even when I first saw this movie. It actually made me want to treat others much better than I had before. I am not saying that I disrespected people wherever I went but this cultural work made me stop and think about my interactions with others. I grew to respect life and the differences that make us each unique. I always figured from that point on that we as human beings are shaped by the things we see, the music we hear, and the art that we come to appreciate. In order to find the answers to those questions I would have to study the 1900s time period in order to understand what things were like. Then I would have to study the culture in 1985 when the movie was made. From there I would be able to draw conclusions and inferences about why the book and this movie was created. In order to find the information to address these questions I would also look to find if there had been any interviews with the author of the book that the movie was based on, and I would look to see if there were any interviews about the movie from those involved in the making of the movie. The book won a Pulitzer Prize and the movie has received many accolades and awards of its own. That shows that not only have people watched the movie, but they also drew their own conclusions about the power of growth, self-realization, and independence. That is not to say

[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 4 that there were no downsides. Many people took as a depiction of how African American men treated African American women. They protested against the movie on these grounds, but the real message was received by those who were looking for it. African American women turned up en mass in order to see the film and they praised it for showing what it did to who it was meant to show it to. I learned about critical thinking, creativity, and communication recently which led me to making the conclusions I have about this movie. With critical thinking, it made me question exactly what I had watched. I tried to find a solution to why it made me feel the way I felt after watching this film. Creativity allowed me to see this film from my own perspective and not just read about it and copy it down from a source. Finally, communication was used to not only effectively create this cultural work, but it also helps me to explain my point of view in a manner that allows for others to understand me. I find that certain works are created through inspiration of when they were made and from what they were made about. For example, “The Color Purple” was made in response to the beliefs and feelings of the author who had her own experiences and it was adapted into a movie in order to highlight the issues that were abundant throughout that time period. Some of those problems still persisted, and the movie helped those who took in the message and fought for their own independence which allowed them to grow. Just like that movie did, other pieces of work can achieve the same impact. We do not live in a perfect world. There are still many injustices that many people face that can be made better or at least known by creating world and expressing them through different mediums whether it be music, film, painting, sculpture, or any of the arts.
