Running head: [SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 1 4-1 Short Answer: Monuments as Cultural Works Desmond Mallery Southern New Hampshire University
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 2 The cultural work I have decided to go with is the Statue of Liberty. I found it fascinating to learn about the original intent for this monument was much different than how I perceived it. I always thought that it was simply a gift from France to the United States to celebrate freedom. I had vaguely remembered that it was also a symbol of friendship between the two countries. I always wondered about its creation and why it has the particular features it did. It shocked me to learn that it was created as an artifact depicting a woman of Muslim Egyptian descent. Learning that it was originally a symbol of immigration, and that immigrants looked to the statue as a symbol of a better life compared to where they were coming from felt very profound. I have a greater appreciation for the Statue of Liberty because of this. It also makes me appreciate the things that I was able to enjoy and what I still am able to enjoy that others may not. It makes me feel very fortunate and I hope that others can be just as if not more fortunate. Learning about the statue’s Egyptian and Muslim background made me think of some interesting things. First, I thought of all the people that dislike immigrants and the fact that they can enter the country. I wondered what they would think if they knew the original intent was because it was a beacon for those looking for a better life. Learning about creation was also very enlightening. Learning that the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi presented it at the home of Mr. Laboulaye, a member of French Parliament, and that they wanted to establish a republican state in France instead of the monarchy of Napoleon. I felt that they were very brave for standing up for what they believe in. Even when dealing with invasions and oppression they still stood up for the idea of having the freedom that they wanted their people to experience.
