Hello Professor and Class,
Option 2:
The twenty-first century is distinguished from previous centuries by a greater
recognition of the importance of the ideas of accessibility and convenience.
The concept of accessibility and ease has played a crucial role in the
enormous advancements in photography that have resulted from the
inclusion of cameras in most, if not all, phones, especially smartphones.
(Artdaily, 2022) The process of taking a photograph used to include using a
massive machine to take the picture and then waiting for it to be developed,
which took a long time.
With smartphones and their add-ons, social media and applications,
exchanging photos across platforms has never been easier. To compile a
collection of photos, you used to have to print the images from the film or
memory card and place them in a photobook. On the other hand, you may
now upload multiple images at once to share on social media with friends,
family, and other users thanks to apps like Facebook and Instagram. Such
access, in my opinion, can have both beneficial and detrimental effects. The
capacity to express oneself and share ideas and feelings via words or photos
is one benefit of sharing and utilizing social media through photography.
Uploading photos is a drawback in that it might result in poor mental health;
several research shows that social media makes people feel depressed and
low on self-worth because they compare their life to that of others (Montare
Behavioral Health, 2021).
Ted Richards discusses and offers support for the notion I put up previously in
a recent piece. He argues that we should consider the effects of social media
and photography from distinct perspectives. He argues that "many of the
negative effects of social media, while unique to social media, are symptoms,
not diseases." For more details, the symptoms don't indicate issues with
social media; rather, they indicate issues with society. Regarding the
favorable consequences, they serve as a basic illustration of the strength
that both technology and society at large possess. I concur with this
assertion because the majority of detrimental psychosocial impacts may be
attributed to society and culture. Furthermore, I believe that social media's
positive psycho-social aspects—which include the ability to stay in touch with
others, express oneself, and find inspiration—best capture the intent behind
the platform (Richards, 2020).
