Hello Professor and Class,
My selection of artwork is called Flaming June, and it was painted by Lord
Frederic Leighton. Oil on canvas was used in the creation of this masterpiece
in the year 1895. "By explaining, clarifying and discovering the concepts and
ideas underlying an artwork, art criticism helps viewers gain a better
understanding of it" (Tam, 2018, on page 1). The evaluation of a work of art
by a critic contributes to the piece's deeper importance and assists viewers
in comprehending what the piece may mean to them personally.
Descriptive Critic:
Address at least 3 different elements of art and/or
principles of design.
The first thing that draws attention from spectators is the young woman's
daring color choice in her attire. It is located precisely in the middle of the
piece of art. The girl's clothing stands out even more because of the dark
hue of the fabric she is lying on. The garment’s second unique feature is its
finely defined shape, which is created by carefully defining the creases.
Third, the composition appears brighter overall due to the light tones of the
open sea and the border of the marble terrace in the background. This
highlights the young woman's face and gives the viewer a feeling of airiness.
Interpretive Critic:
This will require research so that you can understand
the subject, meaning, and intent of the work.
Light hues indicate the act of sleeping, which is a sign of peace, while the
gown's delicate shapes and textures reflect a feminine aspect and a quiet
condition. The girl seems to have more definition and a seductive shape
because of her see-through outfit.
Evaluative Critic:
Use the standards of perfection, insight, and
inexhaustibility (as described in the text).
Because of the details in the see-through fabric of the young woman's dress,
I think this picture is a great work of art. At first, I thought this was a picture
because it had so many details and bright colors. This sculpture looks nice
and fits in with the general mood of the room. It leaves a mark on the
viewer's mind and gives them a feeling of satisfaction and happiness. It
makes them feel different things and lets them interact with the whole body
of work. "By observing our responses to a work of art and examining the
means by which the artist evokes those responses, we can deepen our
understanding of art" (Martin and Jacobus, 2018). In 2018, Martin and
Jacobus say the same thing. When we let a piece of art move us emotionally,
we learn more about ourselves and the message the artist was trying to
convey through their work. Even though every reviewer, like every person,
has a different relationship with art.
