1 Gender Identity and Sexuality Adolescence Paper Miranda Sue Davis College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Grand Canyon University PSY-355: Child and Adolescent Psychology Dr. Minaj Vallo October 28, 2023
2 In the movie The Hunger Games (2012) the main character Katniss struggles with asexuality. Asexual is a person who does not have sexual feelings towards others or not having or showing sexual attraction to a male or female (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2023). Katniss grows from being an introverted person to someone who tolerates other people’s presence. Katniss would spend a lot of time with her father before he passed away. He taught her to hunt with a bow and arrow. He also taught her how to forage for edible plants. During her adolescent years, due to her mother falling into grief, she was left to provide for not only herself, but also her family. Her family included herself, her mother, and her younger sister. This is when she took into account for everything that her father had taught her before he passed away. In the Hunger Games, Katniss was around 11 years old when her father died from an explosion in the mine, he worked in. I believe that Katniss might have struggled with an eating disorder and or malnutrition. Due to her mother’s grief, there was a time in her teen years that she struggled with starvation. Shortly after her mother, sister and self were falling into starvation is when she went out foraging for food and killing animals. Katniss did not have much support at all. The only support she got was from District 11 and that was only bread, sleep syrup, burn medicine, soup, and lamb stew. Other than the support she received from District 11, during the hunger games she allied herself with a young female named Rue only because she reminded Katniss of her younger sister. The lack of support made her extremely independent and a natural survivor. When it comes to the processes of development it could be believed that Katniss may have autism spectrum disorder. This could be because after her father passed away, she isolated herself in order to provide for her family and becoming the “man of the house”. Katniss’s social stigma is several things they include ashamed and depression mostly. She is ashamed because she did not help the girl who was on fire. She is
3 depressed because she is haunted by traumatic memories of her hometown, Rue being pierced to death by a spear, and watching Gale nearly whipped to death. She also blames herself for all of the horrible things that happened because she believes that she could have prevented them from happening. Katniss also has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Post traumatic stress disorder is a real disorder that develops when a person has experienced or witnessed a scary, shocking, terrifying, or dangerous event (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2023). Katniss learns to cope with her Post traumatic stress disorder by the everyday challenge of being poor, her ability to hunt, her toughness, and her resourcefulness. These are all the things that kept her alive throughout the hunger games. When it comes to Christian worldview and the Bible about gender identity, there are a few verses that stand out to me. The first one is Gensis 1:26-27 it states that, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. “So, God created man in His own image of God, He created him; male and female, He created them” (Horchak, 2023). To me this basically means and tells us that God created male and female, but that is only our gender not who we are sexually attracted to. The last verse that stood out to me is Gensis 2:18, it states, “And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him’”. Comparable means suitable, complementary, and counterpart from Hebrew. I believe this means that our goal whether our gender or sexuality is to be there for our partner.
