Horace Ho Mrs. Holdener Western Culture Per 7 Nov. 15th, 2021 1. In what ways are they ostracized? What is it like for them? What do they feel? Chapters 16 and 17 describe Nwoye's thoughts on the emergence of the Christian faith. He was very unhappy with his father because his father described in the first few chapters of the book that he was forced by his father to work hard to complete the assigned tasks. And Nwoye learned about the Christian Trinity and those hymns. For him, what he fears most is the murder of Ikemefuna by his father. It is precise because of the emergence of Christianity that Nwoye can further understand those important things. Because of this, he was taught a lesson by his father. Okonkwo thought Nwoye was very unfilial and angrily drove him away. 2. How do your character’s ostracism compare and contrast to the ostracism in Psalm 137 or in the Melodians version of the psalm? Nwoye has similarities with the parts mentioned in the hymn. The main part of the hymn depicts a group of people leaving the place where they live. The main faith in the area changed from Judaism to Islam. It's like Nwoye's Christianity in the white society appeared in the place where he lives. Because Nwoye believed in their primitive religion in Africa for many years, and the new sect told him that they were all deceptive. This affected his spirit and how he felt about his father. The difference is that Nwoye is different from the person in the hymn. Note changed his beliefs, but the person in the poem wants to restore the original. 1. What does ostracism typically look like in the present? How and why does it happen? Being isolated by the person next to you means that you are too weak in some ways that no one wants to see you in a positive way. In the United States, it may not be possible to compare grades, but in Asia where I lived when I was a child, I would eventually find that students with poor grades were looked down upon by others. Because different people have different goals, some people will end up being marginalized. 2. What are ways of preventing ostracism and increasing connection with other human beings? Can work hard to interact with people they don’t know and be open to unknown people Try to be more tolerant of others and not discriminate against others Icebreaker
