Week 2 Discussion 5
1.
What happens in La Tomatina festival?
1.
La Tomatina is a festival held in Bunol, Spain that’s been going on for 69
years. 140 tons of tomatoes are thrown in the air in less than an hour. 22,000
people from all over the world showed up and it starts at about 11 am. It’s a
national tourist attraction that was a success and continues yearly. It is
technically the world’s largest food fight amongst everyone in the town.
2.
What do you think about the festival? Would you like to experience it someday? Is there
another regional Spanish festival that you would prefer to participate in instead?
1.
I think it looks like a fun tradition, a bit of a waste of tomatoes but sometimes
we have to live a little. I would love to experience it one day, everyone there
looks like they’re having an amazing time. The only other festival that I
know of is the bull-run and this seems like a much safer alternative to that, so
I'll stick to La Tomatina festival.
3.
Does this remind you in any way of a festival that you have participated in or know of?
Compare/contrast to your personal experience or another regional Spanish festival.
1.
This reminds me of a splash festival when I visited the University of Arizona.
They had everything set up for the fraternities and sororities to rush on the
union. They had water gun stations and firetrucks out and everyone would
run the union while being sprayed from all angles with water. It was very
similar, although the tomatoes and water were completely different. It was
insanely fun and I can only imagine that the La Tomatina festival would be
just as fun.
