Week 3 Reply 1 Hello Eddie, I liked it when you spoke about culture, you said “Culture must be valued. Most believers do not realize, especially in the Western World, that the scriptures were written with a communal mind instead of the individualistic culture we experience here in the United States.” I thought about 1 Corthorithians Chapter 12 overall, when studying this week’s lesson. My discussion speaks about diversity too. For instance, in our church, we fellowship with an “Asian Christian Church.” Even though we know that most of their congregation speaks Chinese, we would not fellowship with them because of some of the language barriers that may present themselves concerning preaching and teaching the word of God. Instead, we embrace different cultures; sometimes, our church invites “Nuns” as guest speakers. Plus, our Pastor has a religious background that is Greek Orthodox, and sometimes I listen to Russian Holiness Angelic music from Georgy Sviridov, which is very sacred. We are now in the 21st Century, at least for some of us. Some churches are still stuck in religion, remaining so “Religious “that they are unwilling to embrace other Christians of another culture. When the scripture talks about “The Gifts of the Holy Spirit,” It says, “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit; And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord; And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit likewise. In order to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the i interpretation of tongues: But all these works that one and the very
same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will” (1 Corinthians 12:4-11, King James Version). Just think, in times past, the Roman Catholic church in Rome and the Byzantine Church in Constantinople. They were so busy disputing over communion bread, books, hymns, priestly garments, and styles of crosses that they forgot about the Persons of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and the fact that they were worshiping the same God because, without Jesus Christ Himself, there is no church service! They forgot about the # 1 Guest of Honor, and His name is Jesus Christ! In scripture, it says that “For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also, is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?” (1 Corinthians 12:12-19, King James Version). In this week's video lesson, it is sad to hear that "Throughout the church's history, Christians have experienced difficulty when it comes to unity, separated by language, distance, politics, and theology." 1 These are the same issues that we see presenting in churches today, just as they did in times past. However, the Eastern delegation agreed to a formula designed to heal the schism. 2 Bibliography 1 "Church Divided: What happened in AD 1054 Great Schism of the Church?” Lecture in CHHI510 at Liberty University (Lynchburg, VA, June 17, 2022). 2 Mark A.
